On Thursday, June 1 weâre teaming up with Aperture Foundation to present a night of art, fashion, film, and music to celebrate, Dandy Lion: The Black Dandy and Street Style, by author Shantrelle P. Lewis. Described as âhigh-styled rebelsâ by Lewis, black men with a penchant for color and refined contemporary and vintage fashion have gained popular attention in recent years, influencing mainstream fashion. Through a survey of contemporary photographs from across the globe, Dandy Lion presents and celebrates individual dandy personalities, designers, tailors, movements, and events that define contemporary dandyism in spectacular form, with all of the vibrant patterns, electrifying colors, and fanciful poses of this brilliant style subculture.
Programs will be presented throughout the Museumâs performance spaces and the Georgia OâKeeffe: Living Modern exhibition galleries. Todayâs black dandies take powerful ownership of their identity, redefining what it means to be black, masculine, and fashionable, in a similar fashion to how Georgia OâKeeffe proclaimed her progressive, independent lifestyle through a self-crafted public personaâincluding her clothing and the way she posed for the camera.

6:30â7:30 pm: Screening of three short films: Black Beau by Terence Nance, Sir by Numa Perrier, and the New York premier of Black Dandy by Ariel Wizman and Laurent Lunetta.
6:30â9:30 pm: DJâd dance party and live performance.Â
7:30â8:30 pm: Conversation between panelists Shantrelle P. Lewis (author and curator), Darnell Moore (Editor-at-Large, Interactive One), Ignacio Quiles (Haberdasher, QP & Monty), and Abiola Oke (CEO, OkayAfrica). The conversation is moderated by Rashid Shabazz (VP of Communications, Campaign for Black Male Achievement.)
