Writing Advice: Stereotypes
I often notice (both in original works and in fanfiction) that stereotypes are either too obvious (e.g. all men/boys being sex-hyped and all women/girls being fashion-crazed shopaholics) or they try too hard to break them and end up with different stereotypes instead (e.g. "awkward and timid nerd boy with no social skills whatsoever" or the "Stong Woman TM who is acting like a macho-man and looking down on stereotypical feminine things"). I can't be the only one who's starting to tire of it, so what can one do to improve it?
Well one thing to remember, is that stereotypes are tools based on prejudices. It's been used and shaped by society on both purpose and subconsciously by commercials, politics, propaganda, etc. etc.
Do not be afraid to use stereotypes, but be smart with how you do it. Use it more as an inspiration than a truth. Let's say you want to have a constantly horny man, have him understand consent and being able to fucking get it when the other one isn't interested in their advances. Or if you want to write about a kick-ass woman who takes no shit and hate shopping, let her still admire embroideries etc.
If you're going to break the stereotypes, don't just grab the opposite kind. Think of it a bit like the colour wheel. Green and red are on the opposite side of it, they're each others contrast-colours, but many times that contrast can be too strong for everyday use, so instead you might grab a murky green and a soft purple - they're still different, but it's less likely to stab you in the eye. You can figuratively do the same thing with stereotypes.
Belief is fun, the things you believe determine a lot of your feelings and what you think is possible, but obviously other people have different beliefs than we do which means they are subjective things, not necessarily reflective of reality, things which can be altered, which implies that if you change what you believe you can also change your feelings and your idea of what is possible, which means you can do things you couldn't before 👀
So I've had the deck for 10+ years, I don't want to piss it off, but I'm kind of interested in getting a second deck. Is there any benefit to having more than one deck? You seem like the person to ask

layering meanings in your head
connect with the cards in new ways - the science tarot is great for that, imo
collecting totally cool art
having Options when reading
adding something fresh to your readings
That’s what I can think of right now. And honestly, I don’t particularly ascribe to the idea that decks are anthropomorphic enough to get pissed off when someone has more than one. That’s something we’re most likely ascribing, bc we as humans like doing that. Tarot decks are tools, and really, for the most part, I treat them as such. Tools that help us dig through some pretty heavy shit a lot of the time, but still. Tools.
