"In some places the effigy mounds cluster together in animal groups. In northeast Iowa and Wisconsin along the Mississippi there are lots of bird and bear forms. Near Lakes Michigan and Winnebago there are more panthers and turtles. Other parts of Wisconsin have large areas of lizard-shaped effigy mounds. The mounds sizes are not impressive, but the animal forms are intriguing. Could they be evidence of the animal-related clans that still exist among native peoples today?
