While weâre autopsieing Tim Burtonâs corpse, any thoughts on his latter-day live action faire?
Like, there are kernels of good ideas in his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland adaptations, but theyâre mired by so many other choices that are tired at best and grating at worst. Sweeney Todd is... well, my feelings on that vary from moment to moment. I cannot pass consistent judgment on Sweeney Todd. But Dark Shadows? Just awful, an absolute mess of a movie.
I have admittedly not seen the movies he made after Dark Shadows, but if Miss Peregrineâs et cetera, Big Eyes, and Dumbo were returns to his glory days and secret masterpieces, well, no one told me, so I didnât bother.
As far as Iâm concerned, Big Fish was his last unambiguously good movie, and the last film Tim Burton made before he was cored out and puppeteered by a pod person.
