i’ve had this for literally years? i think i meant to turn it into a longer fic instead, so i saved it. i want to do a rewatch of TDBM at some point, and then fill lots more prompts. but until then, you get five sentences instead of three:

“You know, I’ve never been on a picnic before.”

With someone else, Jean might have expressed her surprise. But Alice wasn’t like anyone else. She didn’t seem the picnic type, exactly. So Jean just nodded.

“Well, then, what do you think so far?”

Alice set her thermos down and offered Jean a smile almost as bright as the sun overhead.

Sports: I played tennis as a kid but I stopped all organized sports after I was about 13.

Nail on the head: "She was a working mum, doing it all on her own, and her time was limited.." I think she did the best she could under the circumstances, but her circumstances were super difficult and she was probably always emotionally and physically exhausted and worried about keeping food on the table, a roof, etc. and sometimes it's all you can do to keep the edges from fraying to oblivion despite your best efforts.

I mean come on! She was basically ready to sabotage her career for him. And he was clearly affected by that. And he walks away like it was just a notch on his belt. That’s what those last two mins leads me to believe.
