(日本語は⬇︎です) For the film "The Shell Collector" I painted a mural in a cone snail shaped shelter - the blind conchologist's house on the beach. After the daytime shooting, I was working alone in the shelter in the pitch dark night during the crazy typhoon. Feeling the tremendous amount of spirits in the atmosphere with knowing not only the tragic history of Okinawa during + after World War II , but also the beach used to be a place for an ancient ritual 'fuso' - funeral rite where the dead body is exposed to the wind until it is eroded completely. I paid my deep respect to the invisible beings while I was working on the piece as if I were "Izumi", a painter who was reborn after poisoned by deadly shell. 渡嘉敷島の小さな浜に建つ貝の形をした盲目の学者の家、その壁に「いずみ」の描いた絵を描きました。その昔は風葬をしていたという入江、空と海からごまんと感じる沖縄の歴史の見えない気配に囲まれて、撮影が終わった夜、台風の中ひとりそこで描いた絵は、毒をもつ貝イモガイのようで、毒をもってしまったイモガイの気持ちのようでもあり、毒に刺され生き返ったイモガイのような女「いずみ」が描いた絵です。 映画【シェルコレクター】公開にあたってその様子のエッセイを書きました。ホホホ座「絵そらごと」で検査してみてください。 #シェルコレクター #theshellcollector #下條ユリ #YuriShimojo (at Tokashiki Island)

(日本語は⬇︎です) A year ago, I was in the remote island of Okinawa, southern tip of Japan, for an exciting project. I could not share what it was at that time but now I can. I was working for the film called "The Shell Collector". One day a blind conchologist rescued a female painter with paralyzed hand "Izumi" who tried to kill herself and was drifted to the shore. She got stung by the fatal poisoned shell while she was staying, and her hand was miraculously healed to be able to paint again. I painted a mural as Izumi painted in her ecstatic excitement as if she was reborn. This Japan / NY productional piece will be shown in NY and Europe too.
