10 Species that can survive at high Temperature
Our planet is full of natural wonders; infact, life existing and evolving to extreme levels, is in itself the biggest wonder. While various species of plants, animals and microorganisms dwells in normal Earth conditions within a specific range of temperature and environmental conditions, still there exist many other living organisms that can survive and even multiply in extreme conditions.
In this post I’ll cover the organisms which can subsist at high temperatures at which normal life forms can never survive. So, let’s learn about 10 of such species that can live at high temperatures.

32. Â Ge. Geobacillus
If you’ve seen the original movie Alien, you know that the android Science Officer Ash calls the Alien “One tough mother …” or words to that effect. The same could be said for Geobacillus.
As a group, Geobacillus can live in temperatures between 5 and 78 °C, a pH range of 2 to 12 (that’s like battery acid to Drano), and a salinity of 0 to 30%. There are about two dozen varieties of Geobacillus, most of them have names that describe their love of heat.
Geobacillus is a thermophile and is found in soil, hot springs, and ocean sediment. One of the most studied species is Geobacillus kaustophilus, which was isolated from the depths of the Mariana Trench; its optimal growth temperature is 140 °F (60°C). That’s way beyond casual hot-tub hot!
Another is Geobacillus stearothermophilus, whose name implies that it loves heat and fat or oil.
And of course there is Geobacillus jurassicus (like Jurassic Park) that was isolated from a high temperature oil reservoir — it’s like living in a French Fry cooker.
These organisms are so hardy that they are used to test sterilizers to see if they are working properly.
Another awesome application uses Geobacillus DNA polymerase in DNA amplification procedures that are similar to the well-known PCR (polymerase chain reaction) but run at lower temperatures.
If you like working at high temperatures under pressure, Geobacillus is for you. Imagine what kind of biochemistry you need to live in hot oil! Geobacillus is a Gram positive rod.
