How would a close-door house meeting with Professor Snape be like?
Dear anon,Ā
Since I am now in an apprenticeship, myĀ āāofficialāā education at Hogwarts ended 4 years ago so now i have my own quarters in Slytherin common room and therefore, i still have to partake in house meetings (which we are not allowed to skip by the way). However Slytherin house rules did not change that much between when i was a student and now that i am an apprentice, so iām going to be as precise as i can.
Essentially, Professor Snape does not come often in Slytherin common room except for house meetings. Close-door house meetings are usually scheduled and happened at least once a week. Professor Snape would arrive in the common room, take a sit and then it would be the opportunity for everyone to talk about some problems and difficulties or to ask questions about school and schoolwork in general. If something happened during the week for instance, you have to report it to the Prefects or Head Boy/Girl and it will be discuss at the next house meeting. Other than this, Professor Snape usually comes in the common room at night to check on the younger years who are not allowed to stay up to late and also to wish a good night to the older years.
That being said, if Professor Snape shows up unexpected in the common room it can only mean that 1) there is a huge problem going on and 2) we are in serious trouble (of course, this does not include common room and dorms inspections which may happened anytime). I think I can speak for all my fellow Slytherin but having Professor Snape disappointed in us is one of the worst things ever. He always stands up for our house when nobody else does and in my opinion, acting like idiots is a poor way to repay him. If one of us lose points for instance, he will take away some more as a punition. It may seem unfair at first sight, but once you are used to it, you realize it is his way to tell us to do better next time.
Also, people may be surprise to learn that the door of Professor Snapeās office is always open either it is 3pm or 2am. If you have a personal problem but do not want to talk about it in front of the all house, you are perfectly allowed to go and seek Professor Snapeās help. I genuinely think he is the definition ofĀ āāan iron fist in a velvet gloveāā because he is very strict and formal and stern but he is also very good at listening and always tries to come up with a lasting solution to our problems. Professor Snape does not mollycoddle you or warmly embrace you of course, but if you are having a mental breakdown and come to his office at night, he will offer you some hot tea and silent company until you are ready to talk (but if you are not willing to talk about what bothers you, he will not force you either).
If memory serves me well, during your whole schooling at Hogwarts, you have to meet Professor Snape in his office once a year. He does this in order to follow you individually during your education but also to help you decide which career you want to pursue after Hogwarts. During these meetings, he also advises you about which electives would be advantageous for you and what subjects you should drop or keep for your NEWTs. Finally, Professor Snape always shares a drink with the 7th year after they passed their NEWTs and just before graduation day. I do not know if the others Head of House do this too, but I know for sure that I keep a very fond memory of that day to be honest.Ā
Well, I think I end up rambling a bit but here it is anon. Now you know how it works when you are in Slytherin. Have a good day and do take care. :)
I always thought Severus would have an impossibly loud and violent sneeze, something that would pain him to keep it quiet and he really fights against
ahah, i kind of agree with you Anon !Ā
Here is how i see the SSC (Severus Sneezing Case) : he has two kind of sneeze depending on the situation. If he feels it coming, he can perfectly control it and like, pinch his nose before letting aĀ cute ass high-pitched sneeze out.
But if he does not feel it coming, he canāt control it and this is when he has an impossible loud and violent sneeze, as you said. Actually, it happened once in the teacher lounge : everything was peaceful and Severus was reading his morning Daily Prophet and he did not feel that violent sneeze coming. It was so loud and so unexpected, it startled half of his colleagues.

worst moment of your apprenticeship so far?
Dear anon,Ā
The worst moment of my apprenticeship so far was probably tutoring the Slytherin/Gryffindor double potions class. Beside this, staying up all night to brew some complex potion is a walk in the park, i promise. I mean, iām used to tutoring Slytherin students and it is not unusual for me to help Professor Snape when he is teaching 1st/2nd/3rd year (even if i donāt think iād like to be a teacher though) but this time, when i tutored this specific class, i was all alone. It was hell.
It happened because one day, i fell asleep in the library and woke up suddenly, realizing i was definitely late to meet Professor Snape. I arrived in the classroom more than 20 minutes late. Professor Snape was⦠obviously not pleased and decided that a punishment was in order. He told me he had an important meeting with the Headmaster the next day and said my punishment would be to supervise the Slytherin/Gryffindor double potions class. Damn, i had to prepare myself for the storm which was coming.Ā
Tutoring the Slytherin/Hufflepuff class is lovely because there is a lot of mutual aid whenever someone has some difficulties. Tutoring the Slytherin/Ravenclaw class is thrilling because the questions are always relevant. Tutoring the Slytherin/Gryffindor class is like walking through a battlefield. I mean, i know what itās like, i was a Slytherin student myself and had my Defense Against the Dark Arts class with the Gryffindors. But for the double potions class, oh my god, i had to exercise an inordinate amount of self-control. The things iāve seen⦠potions ingredients flying across the room⦠cauldrons being melt and exploding⦠a real nightmare. It was the two longest hours of my entire life.Ā
Of course, thanks Merlin, the class ended and when Professor Snape came back, i was cleaning the mess the students had made. He asked me how it went and i think that with a single look, he understood what i meant. He also added with a smirk that now he was certain i would never be late again. And of course, no need to say, iāve learned my lesson ahahahā¦
Thank you for your question anon, have a nice day!Ā
View on the relationship (if any) between Snape & Charity Burbage?
(i donāt know why, but my answer became a headcanon somehow? sorry if it was not what you were expecting,ā¦)
- i think it is difficult to know how close they really are because Snape is someone who obviously keeps everybody at armās length and also because we donāt know anything about their actual relationship until Charityās death. BUT, i do think they are genuinely friends (as in aĀ āāi enjoy your companyāā way and not aĀ āāyouāre my colleague and therefore we are acquaintedāā way) because otherwise, Charity calling Snape her friend and asking for his help (even if she knows he killed Dumbledore) does not make any sense.Ā
- as the Muggle Studies professor, i suppose that Charity is either a half-blood or a muggleborn witch. It may seem pointless but i do think it is important because it means that Severus and she could bond over it and relate to each other. [i think people tend to believe that Snape rejects everything which has to do with muggles but i have to disagree here, i headcanon him as being pretty skilled and comfortable with muggle things, but this is another debate]
- i bet there is at least two bookcases fill with muggle literature in the Muggle Studies classroom and that Snape helps Charity to sort everything in it when she joins Hogwarts staff in 1993. They often discuss literature together : Charity is in love with Jane Austenās works whereas Snape swears only by Emily BrontĆ«. Inevitably, they argue.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āāI can not believe you refered to Jane Austenās works as ādullā, Severus.āā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āāI did Charity, and i shall do it again. To be sincere, i am surprise that you, a woman, would love how women are portrayed in these books.āā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āāWhat is that supposed to mean?āā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āāIn most of Austenās books, the finality for women, in order to be happy, is marriage, which is ridiculous. Moreover, all her works follow the same storyline : a man and a woman meet, they fall in love and go over their respective problems before finally getting married. It is dull.āā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āāAnd of course, the Sisters BrontĆ«ās works are better? They are depressing Severus, just face it.āā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āāOf course they are, but so is life and at least, it is realistic.āā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āā ⦠Are you alright, Severus ..?āā
- during staff meetings, Snape always sit between Minerva and Charity. When someone says something dumb, Charity has to force herself to not laugh at Snapeās sarcastic comments and his exasperate face. When they have papers to mark, Snape meet Charity in the Muggle Studies classroom. They sit together, sometimes in confortable silence and sometimes while listening to music coming from the record-player in one corner of the room.
- to sum up my thoughts about Snape and Charity, i think their relationship was probably spontaneous, you know? something likeĀ āāhey, i did not expect to actually like you because we are really different but it appears that i enjoy very much our discussionsāā. I cannot imagine how Snape must have felt when he saw Charity in Malfoy Manor because, he is not a stupid man and he probably knows that she was going to die.Ā
- what actually caught Snape by surprise was, i think, the fact that she did ask for his help. As i said before, it was clearly unexpected since Charity was obviously aware that he killed Dumbledore some months ago. But she still did try to ask for his help. Why? Because no matter why Snape killed the Headmaster, Charity still thought of him as a friend despite everything. This is so bittersweet in my opinion, imagine what went through Snapeās mind between the moment Charity saidĀ āāwe are friendsāā and the moment her lifeless body fell on the table. He could not ask for mercy to Voldemort. He had done that before after allā¦Ā
- It also probably conforts Snape in the idea that keeping people at armās lengh is necessary and that he is better alone, because it appears to him that he always ends up hurting people either directly or undirectly.
