This book is disturbing and disgusting but gives a powerful and authentic insight into emotionally unstable people’s mental health and thought processing. 🧜🏼♂️ A 38 year old PhD student after a bad breakup and bad breakdown, leaves the city to spend the summer dog sitting at her sister’s beach house. She attends group therapy and becomes sexually vulnerable in an attempt to get over her ex. 🧜🏼♂️ Then she meets a male mermaid and the book gets very weird. Only at the end, when she makes a symbolic and meaningful decision, did I fully grasp the importance of all the smoothly implanted metaphors. 🧜🏼♂️ And whilst I strongly struggled to relate to her desperation to please Tinder men with expensive underwear and casual (bad) sex, the book perfectly captures that dark and daunting feeling of the constant power struggle of people with intimacy issues and fear of abandonment. 🧜🏼♂️ Even if you’re an old soul like me, and you might don’t get modern dating and are too old fashioned to just put yourself out there, this book can still give a very beautiful and powerful insight into the darkness of fear and loneliness that comes from wanting what you can’t have and fearing what you can. 🧜🏼♂️ One of the things that strike me from reading this book, is how this illness, this emotional codependency makes people so self-centred. Our main character neglects a suicidal friend, tranquillises her sister’s dog and doesn’t do anything with her life apart from living off of her student loan (at 38!!). That’s why the saying, if you want to help yourself, try helping others.
