It was his fault. He had dragged Rory into this. He should have just left the nurse back at his house after that first meeting, investigated on his own. There was no need to put the man through all this, offer him so much false hope only to snatch it away.

The Doctor had found a way to close the Crack. He could seal it, prevent the explosion that caused it from ever forming in the first place. He could stop time and space from disintegrating, save the universe, all of creation.

But sealing the crack meant forever losing all that had already been eaten by the Crack. Nothing would come back out. Amelia Pond would never exist again, except as a memory.

It was all his fault for helping Rory remember. He had been so insistent about it at first, convinced that it would help with his investigation. Now he regretted ever doing so as he stared at Rory, who stared right back angrily at The Doctor from where the metacrisis had shoved him back into the pavement.

"I know, but I have to do this. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”

He shut the doors of the Tardis and dematerialized.

He swore loudly in Gallifreyan as the men got past the door he had been trying to shut in their face. He dropped all the wires, abandoning his attempt.
