There’s this one patient that was transferred to our unit s/p VATS procedure and had his pleural fluids checked. Very nice man with a very huge family. I had him for a few hours during his first stay at our unit and no trace of sadness was seen on this guy. Family members all over the room crying... which I can understand.

I’ve been thinking about writing a blog about my nursing experiences. One of my patient’s daughter saw how hard we deal with everyday and we nurses just go on with our daily routine like nothing happened. She suggested me to write a book about these crazy things but I am not a writer. Probably I can blog about it.

Something about myself. I’m a man. I’m a nurse. I’m a “murse”. A male nurse, that is. I have been a nurse for quite a while - almost 10 years. I started with home health nursing, got myself in in a skilled nursing facility, and just got hired at a hospital in Chicago. Finally. 

I’ve been struggling to get into a hospital. It’s been hard especially every hospital “requires at least 1-2 years of hospital experience.” Once I see that line in the job description, I know I won’t get a chance to get in. But then, a friend of mine got a call back for an interview in this one hospital. I just went as a support system ‘coz he’s all nervous about it. I hang out outside the HR office waiting for his interview to be done. After his interview, HR asked him if he knew someone who would be interested with working with the hospital. He immediately introduced me and the HR manager told me to send my application online and follow-up with her. And I did. Had my HR interview and panel interview the following week. Got hired at a Surgical Step-Down Unit! And my friend got hired as well in another department. Thank God I went with him on his interview!

I know this hospital experience will be a whole new level in my career! I started a few months ago with orientation. Just finished orientation a few weeks ago and I think I’m handling everything good on my own with the help of my colleagues.
