Bought this book. Having grown up overlooking #themeadowlands, it was reasonable to make the leap to purchase the hardcover. There mythology that blanketed the expanse and the scary stories that kids tell, some of which were rooted in the truth, make communing with this patch of the earth akin to reaching out for spirits with a ouija board in a dark room. Melancholy and tragedy can exist in the daylight. The mundane, new topographics, the sublime, and the wasteland all in one GIANT book.. In 2003 The Wrens made a quantum leap from the comparatively nondescript alt.albums that Nate used to book ads for in Spin. "The Meadowlands" is the sound of a band finding its relevance in crushing failure, and paradoxical beauty in the death of its own dream.  It's like a stark Cormac McCarthy telling of aging 90s indieguy ennui, out of reasons to get back in the van and slowly resigned to a life unfulfilled in, well, New Jersey.  The songs form a richly (bleakly) cohesive album that's still imbued with flashes of hope, but this one where hope finally succumbs hits the hardest: "aren't you happy now/you got what you want/I wanted you/but I'm over that now." (J-Rock)
