The idea of not conforming to what was implanted in your brain since you come into existence is like exploring a forbidden cave full of glittering jewels with exquisite colours and shapes. You could choose to abandon the emerald but it isn't easy to completely disregard everything that has made up your life until now; so hidden away deep inside a little flicker of green can be found amongst the ever-growing spectrum of colours.

Queer Activism in Appalachia
Ryan W., Grace J., Spencer G.
The collective of Queer Appalachia redefines stereotypes of the region by showcasing intersectional queer art, resilience, and resistance that combats the dominant narrative of “white, straight, rural, and patriarchal (Gaddy, pg. 3)” culture. Our group loves the grassroots and independent nature of the collective’s activism and community building; they resist and grow through creativity. Queer Appalachia also provides resources and activism around addiction and healthcare because these items dramatically impact their communities. Their page devoted to recovery and addiction states “as if being queer in rural regions isn’t ostracizing enough, the addition of trying to recover only further exacerbates these experiences.”
