A plugin for Tumblr themes that shows the original post’s date in {Month} {DayOfMonthWithZero}{DayOfMonthSuffix}, {Year} format by adding the poster’s username and post link as custom attributes to an element within a {block:NotReblog} or a {block:RebloggedFrom} context; comes with options based on those in the Tumblr docs. Works for both original posts and additional reblogs!
Options:

shortMonth: e.g. “Feb” or just “February”
dayWithZero: e.g. “09” or just “9”
dayWithSuffix: e.g. “21st” or just “21”
shortYear: e.g. “‘26” or just “2026”
[ optional ] .then() method if you want to handle the date further.

I have about two comms to-do and im going to work on those asap but I'm trying to rework my masterlist and I kind of got into coding. I know most people are mobile based and this wont change how you see anything on mobile it will all be available there but ... I've made a couple things I'll share for others to use just keep the credit in, I'm trying to make temp background for the basecode I made its a container them with popup options you can use it for your writing or for roleplay but its coming.
I have a masterlist that has a fandom section landing page and then I have the options for the stories for each fandom with optional tags like pairing, rating and summary if you so choose as well as a section for the banner.
For the rp people I am making a character page that will allow you to do all your oc's or canon characters in place with stats, photos, general information as well as bio and immediate family. If anyone is interest in those things I am going to link them here - this is their temp pages and the theme is going to be my base for the iraot themes blog :)
fanfic masterlist theme
OC RP temp
I am going to put notes into the code so you know what each section is for okay? this way its not confusing to people who have never done code before. It took me ages to understand popups without java :sobs forever: but this is what I've got.
also i am getting back into graphic making so if i feel good enough for it i might do comms for that for the basecode so everyone has theme thats 100% theirs but im not saying im doing that yet donnnnt ask lol
<3
hiya egg!! i was wondering, if i wanted to start building my own tumblr themes, where should i start? i already know how to use HTML, CSS, and JS; i'm just not sure where exactly to start my tumblr theming journey. also ty for your hard work and lovely themes <3
hi!
So I recommend looking at the official documentation for theme making. It's a good reference for what blocks and variables you can use.
I also made a base code that includes all the basic things your theme needs, including theme garden requirements. It's intended to be used for learning so you are free to edit as much as you want and release it as your own theme.
I started making a guide to go with it that goes over what the blocks are doing. Here's the guide for blocks and variables, the guide for posts in general, and the tips for theme options/styling.
Feel free to use the guide even if you don't want to use my base code. Aside from mine, theme-hunter has a tag for base codes!
hi! I love your themes and I'm learning how to code, so I'd like to know if you'd share some tips like tools or resources (for exemple, do you use figma or adobe xd?). It's okay if you're not comfortable with that, but thanks either way (since I use one of your themes and absolutely love it)
thank you so much!!!! welcome!! i feel like i should not be giving advice but anyway lets give it a go
my tips are:
1. find a base code you like - i used seyche's for ages until I was finally comfortable enough in making my own (which I haven't actually used on a release yet). it's good bc it has lots of instructions within the code to help you out. eggdesign also has a really good one for beginners. i recommend just diving in and playing around until you get a good feel for it.
2. i would recommend sketching or having some idea of what you're doing but tbqh i mostly just make it up as i go and see what happens. it makes my codes really messy and i have to spend much much longer fixing them though, whoops! i don't use figma or XD or anything else. i use github to host my codes, and use codepen when i want to figure out little things. tumblr can be realy annoying sometimes so i prefer to code in the acutal customizer.
3. in terms of other resources, things i use the most are phosphor icons, google fonts, eggdesign & annasthms css photoset script, eggdesigns day/night mode (this is also really excellent for anything you want to do on click with some tinkering), this guide on flexbox, and w3schools. google is your friend! if you google "css accordion tutorial" you'll find heeeeaaaaps.
4. oh also have the tumblr docs bookmarked and if you're working on something have it open. it explains how stuff is implemented on tumblr.
4. join the coding cabin - they're super helpful at sharing resources or helping you out when you're stuck with something. also at tumblr-specific stuff that you can't really get help with from google.

Just another installment of my writing Theme Creation: A Thought.
In this writing, I will share with you my process of thoughts when it comes to making themes. Nothing much but this writing is targeted for people who are unsure where to start when it comes to creating theme.
Every theme-maker is different so just because I create my theme this way, it does not mean that you are bound to do the same.
a. Designing
What I love the most when it comes to theme-making is actually the process of designing. Brainstorming is something that I love to do! I would design a few rough ideas and their placements for my new theme. Placements here mean where should I put the sidebars, the containers, etc. Depending on the mood, I will design it digitally so that I will see the colors better:
This is my rough design for my first theme - Bayu
I have my own minibook where I brainstorm most of the designs here.
Most of the rough designs will not ended up the same as the final product since I tend to improvise my design along the way + I forgot to include vital small features like pagination, and permalinks.
b. Deciding the color schemes
I’ve never been the type of person who is good with selecting color schemes. However, I tend to select colors based on a photo that I used for my theme. Examples:
i. Lil Mo’s Theme
The colors are based on Lil Mo himself (the sidebar image)
ii. Redirect Page 01: Game
The color for the [Get the Code] derives from the houses and the [Back to Themes] derives from the signboard.
iii. My Personal Blog:
The colors selection comes from the Header’s image (Mononoke)

c. Customizing the larger parts of the theme
For my themes in general, I tend to start from places that are not really related with the posts such as sidebars, headers and even footers. I personally like doing things that are not necessarily related to the post because I find it easier to create as to compare with the posts itself.
For posts, we all know that there’s a lot of petty details that you need to focus on etc. I find that perfectly annoying to be honest lol!
In regards to where I edit it, I have 2 side blogs that I personally use as my editor. One is specifically for theme editor and another is just my abandon blog that I changed its purpose to theme editor.
d. Customizing the posts - text/photo/photoset/audio/link/video/chat/ask etc
I realize that some of the theme-makers tend to simply copy and paste their old posts code and apply it on their new theme. Though it is perfectly fine, I try my best to not do that because I think that the best way to improve oneself is to make new designs every time.
But because of that ‘mindset’ itself, I ended up burdening myself with thinking individual designs of each posts. Nonetheless, here are my ranking from posts that I enjoy working on the most to the part where I don’t like it at all:
Text post: Easy
Quote: My favorite! There’s a lot of way to design this post
Video: Too easy. No need to beautify it that much
Ask
Photo
Link: I honestly have no idea how to customize it
Chat: (My inner thought: A feature I believe is so not important but I still need to make it pretty because who knows there are user who mainly posts chat posts. I can’t make them that plain?)
Audio: I like creating this post but because there’s a lot things that need to be customized (including spotify and soundcloud), it becomes something that I find bothersome (and ended up doing it last).
e. Doing the petty parts of the blogs
I don’t know about other theme-makers but I personally do not like to create minor details like note counts, permalinks, tags and even likes and reblogs. This is due to the fact that I was too engrossed in perfecting the posts I ended up forgetting to leave space for the minor details.
...... why ._.
Conclusion
That’s all from me! There’s nothing beneficial about it aside from the fact that I rant here and there lol. But for those who have idea where to start when it comes to create a theme, I hope it can give you an overview on where to start!
RESOURCES THAT CAN BE USED FOR THEMES THAT COST MONEY
cos every two seconds someone’s like ‘hey, you don’t own that, how dare you profit off it’ even though realistically nobody really cares that much about you using one (1) photo that isn’t legally yours.
LINEAR ICONS
not only are they hollow & generally a lot prettier than the fontawesome ones, they also use <span> tags instead of <i> tags, which is just... a lot more logical tbqh cos icons aren’t italicised. also, i’ve read the license and can confirm you’re allowed to sell stuff that includes the free version.
ADOBE FONTS + GOOGLE FONTS
you should probably be using google fonts already, given that it hosts popular fonts like roboto and abeezee. adobe fonts also has a bunch of really nice fonts — especially things like abril ( google fonts has abril fatface, but adobe also has the rest of the styles ), and a whole array of nice display fonts ( gothic, script, hand-lettered, decorative, etc. ). all free fonts on both these sites can be used for basically anything, which is awesome, because unlike dafont, you don’t have to keep checking if it’s a ‘personal use’ font or not.
UNSPLASH
i’ll be honest, i don’t use unsplash as much as i should for themes ( but hey. i’m sure kpop companies have bigger issues to worry about than some kid using their photos to sell tumblr themes ). mostly because i’m terrible at coming up with a colour scheme or pictures to fit a specific theme. but it’s great, especially because every photo is free for commercial use.
W3SCHOOLS
you can’t just copy their code exactly, that’s against their rules, but w3schools is a great tool to learn html, css, javascript, jquery and just about anything else that falls under the umbrella of web development ( although why you’d learn php is beyond me because that just seems painful ). that way, you won’t need to copy other people’s javascript.
CSS-TRICKS
another great resource, and one that i use a lot ( especially because it discusses how to do things with or without webkit, which is awesome for people who use firefox, internet explorer or opera ). it’s also run by an actual human being who isn’t a complete dick like some people on stack overflow.
MOZILLA
the folks who made firefox have an entire website full of stuff for developers. some of their css docs also show what happens when you implement certain things, which is really helpful for those of us who prefer visual-based learning. they also have a list of -moz- alternatives for -webkit-, which is helpful.
that’s basically everything that i use, but others are welcome to add more !
