and then naturally today's lecture on newmann's projections and chair and boat structures completely lost me. 

I finished my first of week of my second year in college this past week. I've found all my professors to be amazing thus far! I especially like my organic chemistry professor which I think is oh so important because that class is going to be hard enough as it is..I couldn't imagine having a bad professor on top of everything else. I really love my bio professor as well. My physics professor is, uh, definitely a bit on the crazy side of things-- but I guess with a lot of studying I can pull off an A in that class. (hopefully).

I also met the two freshman that I'm going to be mentoring this summer. Neither of them are premed- both of them want to pursue PhDs in psychology and pursue a career in academia and do research. I'm actually really excited about that. Their unbridled passion and excitement for research and succeeding as well as their varied interests (dance, religion, neural injury awareness) means that we have a lot more in common than I expected even though they aren't premed, Anyway it was super nostalgic to see excited and overwhelmed little freshmen, eyes glistening at all the possibilities college has to offer to them. (it wasn't too long i was in their shoes, you know)

As many of you may know, I work in a neuroscience lab. I'm planning on applying for an undergraduate research scholarship. i'll also get to participate in a poster contest if I win the scholarship.The winner of the poster contest then gets another scholarship to continue their research! 

This is something I'm super excited about!! 

hey guys! i'm nearing the close of the first week of my sophomore year of college! it's been a great experience so far but oh so busy! sorry for the lack of posting this past week...i've been taking care of a lot of administrative chores- visiting my advisers  (pre-health and academic), buying textbooks, orientations for different groups and activities, etc. Also, i've been trying to get used to my new schedule for the semester and planning out when good study times would be and such. i PROMISE that tomorrow i'll have a huge long post about what my experience  this first week has been like. i've figured out a lot this semester and am really excited to share it with you all!

i have to be up at 7am tomorrow morning to go into lab.

I’ve absolutely loved all my experiences in the medical field thus far and they have done nothing but affirm that this is the career for me. I’ve shadowed a gastroenterologist and an endocrinologist before and the  power of modern medicine and the knowledge and intuition of doctors has amazed me beyond words. I’ve been working at a non-profit clinic for uninsured patients for the past 2 summers. The lessons and things I’ve seen there and the people from all walks of life I’ve had the privilege of meeting from well-educated people in between jobs to refugees from war-torn countries who can’t speak English have taught me things I never imagined I would learn.  I’ve learned invaluable lessons about the American health care system, modern medicine, and my community. And I’ve absolutely LOVED every minute of it. 

You know, most doctors think of what they do to a certain extent as a job and that’s true. It is their job. It is what they do for a living. But every time I heard a patient say “Thank you doctor, thank you so much for helping me and thank you so much for spending time with me” it really made me think because to them the doctor had done more than his or her job. The doctor had touched them in some way. There’s a quote that I’ve seen on my dash a couple of times and I don’t exactly recall who it’s by or if it’s just something another Tumblr user said but it basically says- “Doctors don’t just save people, they touch people” and I think that’s pretty true from my experiences in the health care field. 

Now of course this is just all me. By no means are these sentiments and thoughts universal and I’m definitely not speaking for anyone except me here. SOOOOOO….how to best tell if medicine is the best career for you? VOLUNTEER! SHADOW! Many hospitals have junior volunteer programs if you’re still in high school and if you’re in college, call the hospital’s volunteer or hospitality department and find out how to get involved. Many hospitals have shadowing programs as well. Ask around and do some research. You can also call/email individual clinics, private practices, and physicians in your area and ask if you may shadow them or volunteer at their offices. If you get turned down the first couple of times, keep trying! There are plenty of physicians out there who would be more than happy to take you on!

I could spend years talking about my experiences in the health care field and how they made me feel. But the only way to find out if this is right for you or not is to jump in and experience it yourself!
