It was a rather musical weekend, as not only did I see Too Much Joy on Sunday, but also spent Friday night catching Texas Swing masters The Mavericks as well. But Sunday, however, gave me an opportunity to indulge in simple meandering in the East Village before the TMJ show, which meant I stumbled across a Dia de Muertos festival with some lovely Latin jazz being performed; visited Limited To One (which I love though I never find anything there) and A1 Records, where I found a test pressing of “No Time To Play” by Guru for $5 and bought Miraj’s “In The Pocket” right off the turntable; and just generally hung out. It could be argued (easily) that I subscribe to the work ethos of “No Time To Play” a little too much, so agenda-less wandering for an hour or two was good for the soul.

When Mrs. VinylAnswer and I got married, our wedding song was “Loving You,” a sweet, upbeat album track from the alt-country act The Mavericks and their 1996 album, “Music For All Occasions.” It’s 1950s-ish and Roy Orbison-esque and a lot of fun. We even had a custom license plate for a number of years that said “Luvinyou,” but people always thought it referred to the old Minnie Riperton ballad; with our kid now old enough to drive, we had to get rid of it, ‘cause that’s not what you want your teenaged daughter driving around with on her car! 
Anyway, a year or two after we got hitched, we were in a dollar store one fine summer’s day and stumbled across this Christmas ornament of the album’s front cover. That’s pretty weird, to be honest (probably why it was in a dollar close-out place!), but we took it as a sign and bought two (good thing, as the loose one broke last year). The Mavericks have adorned our tree every year since and placing it on there always gives us a little bit of joy.
