The Executive Producer Aaron Helbing Explains The Flash Season 3 Episode 17 “Duet” With:

The Flash Season 3 Episode 17

“Duet” (SPOILER ALERT)  We begin with a flashback, as a young Barry watches “Singing in the Rain” with his mom. Cisco Ramon wakes him up and asks why he’s been watching so many musicals and Barry gives a reply he may soon regret: “Everything’s better in song.”

A message from H.R. snaps them into action, and when they arrive at S.T.A.R. Labs, they are surprised to see Hank Heywood and Mon-El come through the portal carrying an unconscious Supergirl. Hank says they need their help and that the person who left her in that state is on Team Flash’s Earth.

After an awkward intro to Mon-El, Vibe says he can track breachers but he might not have to since a guy just materialized out of thin air. H.R. gives Wally West a pep talk, encouraging him to get back on the horse and ride.

Flash and Kid Flash confront the mysterious stranger, who says he can do a lot of things and just wants to teach them all a lesson. The man says Kid Flash looks scared and Flash is too slow, and he puts the same eye whammy on Barry that we saw him hit Kara with on Supergirl.

To his surprise, Barry emerges in a Chicago-esque nightclub and watches Kara sing “Moon River.” She makes eye contact with him while finishing the song, and Barry tells one of the random people in the club that he knows her.

Neither hero knows exactly what is going on or why they are there, but they compare notes and determine they need to find a way out. The owner of the club is Malcolm Merlyn, but he claims he’s not, despite how quick he is with a knife. And uh-oh, neither Barry nor kara have their powers. They soon meet incarnations of Winn and Cisco and Supergirl makes some great Wizard of Oz references.

The villain reappears and lets them know the world was one the heroes created in their own minds. He’s also out in the real world, not in their shared fantasy, and the only way for them to get out is to follow the script. And wow, Winn and Cisco are good singers, and Malcolm is passable. “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” indeed. Also, group dance!

With the villain gone at the end of the number, Barry convinces Kara they need to figure out the plot of their musical. Unfortunately, a gangster who looks like Professor Martin Stein shows up and clobbers Barry with the handle of his gun.

When he comes too, he and Kara catch up on each other’s romantic misadventures. Things get real when a man who looks like Joe West shows up. His name is Dixie and he claims he runs the town. He’s looking for his daughter, Millie, this world’s version of Iris. Under some obvious duress, the heroes agree.

Faux Cisco leads them to Millie’s apartment, and after they kick down the door, they discover Millie making out with this world’s Mon-El.

Caitlin Snow has bad news in the real world: the villain is draining their powers. Sure enough, we see him at the Central City Bank, showing off both Flash’s speed and Supergirl’s heat vision. Kid Flash, Vibe and Martian Manhunter all say they will go bring in the bad guy, who taunts Wally into a race.

Working together with help from Vibe’s portals, Manhunter and Kid Flash both land mean shots on the bad guy. Nighty night!

How about we check in on Barry and Kara? They try convincing Millie and whoever Mon-El is to tell their fathers they’re in love and are surprised to see that it works. Like really easily.

Millie’s dads (ah, the faux Stein is one of her dads too) are happy to see her but less happy to hear she’s in love with Tommy. He fares no better telling Cutter the truth, so it’s up to Barry and Kara to make inspiring speeches that wouldn’t you know it — have something to do with their current situations. Jesse L. Martin and Victor Garber, take it away! John Barrowman gets in on the song too, but I don’t know what song it is. Alas, both sides decide they want to go to war.

Even locked up int he Pipeline, the mystery villain has riddles. Specifically, he informs Iris and Mon-El that they have the power to help Barry and Kara but need to figure out how. Meanwhile, Barry dubs the bad guy the Music Meister and Winn’s counterpart helps them whip up the humorous duet “Superfriends,: which they end up performing on stage.

After the show, the gang war breaks out behind the club, and both Barry and Kara end up caught in the crossfire. That makes Flash and Supergirl’s vitals go haywire and Iris to ask Cisco to vibe her and Mon-El into the dream world. “I love you” flies back and forth, and a kiss from Iris and Mon-El brings Barry and Kara back. I’ll let you figure out who kissed who.

Music Meister is there too, applauding them for their performance. He says he was true to his word about teaching them a lesson … about love, obviously. H.R. asks where he’s from, and Music Meister says he wouldn’t even understand before vanishing. With one last song, of course.

Joe West thinks the whole thing is pretty funny, and it comes out in public that both Barry and Kara have excellent singing voices. Supergirl and Mon-El seem fine, but Barry tells Kara, “We’ll see” when it comes to #WestAllen.
