Yeah Nug is definitely one to spin. I've been working with the Parelli specialist at our barn (works wonders for competition horses!) and he's super tight in his shoulders, and I've talked to the massage therapist about his tight back, yeah he's tight all over xD we're working on it! Do you any parelli or "natural horsemanship" stuff? Also that video when Honey pushes the camera was hilarious haha
I figured it would happen hahahah. I don’t know if you can hear it but almost immediately after I fixed the camera, Jamie walked behind it and I was certain she was going to mess with it too but she didn’t lol.
I don’t do Parelli but I do use a bit of natural horsemanship. Mostly Clinton Anderson and mostly for ground work. I think “traditional training,” natural horsemanship, liberty, and R+ all has its place and I like to take things from all of them. Honey is actually being trained using a clicker while Jenny responds well to almost straight traditional training. What I do varies from horse to horse, but Bella seems to respond better to a 50/50 mix of positive reinforcement and pressure/pressure release so that’s how I teach her.
If you think he’ll spin, definitely start on the ground. Just stand to his side with a halter/lead and pull gently in the direction you want him to flex and gauge how much he resists. If he’s completely confused and spinning and not wanting to give at all, release the pressure as soon as he even slightly dips his head in your direction. Don’t worry about him moving his feet, just move with him (stay at his shoulder) and don’t release until his head moves in to you, even just a little bit and even if it’s a fluke. Keep that up until he is visibly starting to get the idea. Then ask for a little more flex, and more give. He’ll probably resist actually giving into the pressure for a while - bending his head in your direction doesn’t mean he’s giving into you and actually flexing but accept it in the beginning so that he can understand the concept of what you want. Eventually you want to be able to pick up with one finger and have him immediately flex in that direction and stay there like you saw Bella do, not just pop back forwards.Â
Here is a video showing exactly what I just explained by a Youtube guy that I love. He’s got the leadrope attached to the horse’s halter literally by a horse’s tail hair so that shows how soft you can get these horses by doing this.
Another video by the same guy on teaching lateral flexion with a bit.
Mounted or on ground? (the lateral stuff) I'm assuming mounted, but you never know
Both! I started it mounted with Bella just because I knew she wasn't going to be a difficult one to teach but if you think that you may have some trouble, definitely start on the ground. Lateral flexing can be a lot easier to teach on the ground first because lots of horses think they have to spin in a million circles hahah.Â
You are so awesome with that collection video! I've been struggling so much with Nugget with collection and I've had a few things I've been recently trying, and this opens my eyes to a few more things I could try. Thank you for being amazing, as always :)
No problem! That's how I've always done it and it's always given me good results. What you see in the video is after only one other 15 minute session the day before, so I think I'm seeing good results with her as well. :)
I'm sure you know but saying it anyways bc reasons but: headset is only 1/3 of collection. You've also got the back and the hind end which are more important than head set. To get the back engaged and into collection, though, your first step is to get them stretching their neck down and relaxing so that their back will naturally come up and engage. :) I would suggest working on lateral and vertical flexing for 10-15 minutes before every ride.Â
Yay for joining the team!! Will you be able to use Bella? I'm asking since she's gaited. Or will you have to use one of VCU's horses?
Thank you! I could use Bella if I really wanted to, but I'm not. The way IHSA works when you show is you go to the host's barn and you're assigned a random horse to ride for the show. Because of that, they want you to ride a different horse every lesson to get used to adjusting. Everyone on the team rides lesson horses. I'll only have one lesson a week though so I'll still have plenty of time to ride Bella.

Oh dear, what did she do?
i think she caught it on her stall guard when she leaped out of her stall to bite cameron. it was a lot deeper than i initially thought it was. but she's all stitched up now and unhappily stalled in a nice cool box with fluffy shavings. Â
Dallas is looking really, really good!
Thank you so much! :)Â
I agree, it has a nice ring to it.Â
Though, my favorite so far is between Quality Walt and Sapphire Silk.
