Today is Veteran's Day in the US, a day to honor military veterans. I have conflicting feelings about the US Armed Forces, but it's mainly because I have conflicting feelings about politics and pacifism and patriarchy and patriotism and political will and how to each should/could reconcile with one another in the 21st century. I have many fewer conflicting feelings about sacrifice. About the sacrifices our loved ones and neighbors make for our loved ones and neighbors. For a post on this veteran's day, I was looking for a picture I once took of my mother's daddy's (PaPa) Bible from his Army days. I couldn't find it, but I did find this picture of a newspaper clipping. My guess is that my mom's mother (PaPa's wife) kept it from a local paper several decades ago, and it seems extra relevant and poignant for 2019. So much in the world has changed in the last 50 years, the last 5 years, the last 5 months, and very likely in the last 15 minutes. And in my core I believe we can do better in the next 60+ years, individually and collectively, for our neighbors and friends and future veterans. I spied with my little eyes not one but two heart-shaped leaves on my driveway this morning.
