1 and 2 are GREAT!! If you’re buying the official English stuff, it already has the reload materials in them. i.g. DR1 getting School Mode, etc etc. They are excellent and frankly, if you don’t consider yourself a diehard after playing those two... stop there!

Despair girls sucks and ends up having 0 consequences on the plotline for the rest of the series. At all. It’s useless and bad and the controls are wonky and it doesn’t feel like a DR game in the slightest. Not because of the gameplay changes, because that’s to be expected, but because of the writing.

DRv3 crosses a lot of lines like... graphically. Everything is gorier. Everything is more sexual. Every boundary is pushed and it’s NOT PUSHED WELL. Granted, I understand why they did it, it’s just a big ol’ cringe. I STILL REALLY ENJOYED THIS GAME!! quite a bit! I’m just filing it under a guilty pleasure because it was very not a good game.

In terms of the anime and novels: DR:0 is a good read and reveals a lot of good info, though DR3 anime ends up contradicting a lot of it and erasing some important events. DR3: Future volume? Very good, very interesting. DR3: Despair volume? Written for shock value and completely ignores the social manipulation factor involved in previous games in favor of a cop-out that killed me inside.

DR: Kirigiri is really fun!! What I’ve found of it translated so far. DR: Togami I had a harder time getting into. I never did read DR: Hagakure and I feel like I should.
