“Hey, hey, hey, deep breaths! In through the nose, out through the --- giant flaming beak?” Nice one, Parker. Although Jean had shared her experience of the Phoenix, those amazing and terrifying stories of merging with a burning cosmic force to save a life in the cold vacuum of space, never did her words prepare Peter for the sight of it in its entirety; the blank, hollow eyes of its stare, the heat that by all rights should roar from it like the first gasp of a dawning star yet never came, ushering only the sense of absence and the scream of his spider-sense at what was yet should not be, the weight of its gaze upon him, as though all the vast and teeming cosmos was brought to bear, pinning down shoulder and soul alike.
Gloved hands ripped the singed and tattered mask from his countenance, exposing wide eyes and pleading gaze -- none dared follow the Phoenix, even with the city’s hero caught in its burning claw. A single hand arose, steady and placating, in the way of soothing a snarling hound, a bucking horse (She’s kind of an animal, right? Just...a big space one. With all the power of life. Oh boy. )
“I’m okay, look, see? All in one piece?” A nervous shimmy, ignoring the twinge of pain racing across bruised and battered ribs. “Everything working!” A slight sigh, brows knitting over dow-brown gaze. “I do my duties, pay the price. I know you worry, and Jean worries, but I know this isn’t in vain. Sometimes you gotta get smacked about a bit to save the day, you know? I’m okay, promise.”
