Recently, forward progress began on the renovation of the main architectural structure in my original thesis. I have new material to shoot, but there's now a fence around the construction zone. Since I can't be as close to the building as I have been in the past, I had to find a way to artistically tell the story of the renovation from the vantage points available. There are several places on the building where they removed damaged wood, but they were not suitable for more detailed images. The largest section of work was where the clapboard siding had been removed to expose the structural wood beneath. I felt this carried forward the narrative of introspection and considering our relationship to our environment by looking inside ourselves. It also juxtaposes the idea of looking beneath the surface of the architecture on the Cape and the "old bones" of these buildings as compared to the kiln dried 2" x 4" studs. Compositionally, I contrasted the verticals of the bright columns and windows with the rich, brown horizontal planks in the first two images. The first image was taken in the morning. The second has the late afternoon sun which shines on the front of the house during the longer summer days. August sun is the best to color the stark white painted wood of the facade. The angular light reveals the grain of the wood, the nails, and impressions in the wood. The individual boards are more apparent. The intrusion of shadows from the wires is unavoidable, and a wider crop might be necessary to reveal them instead. This heightened natural color is what I'm trying to perfect to show the beautiful houses that are still very present in many areas here. Portrait orientation and framing accents the vertical shapes of the window, and in the second picture, the chimney. The second image has the color contrast of the blue sky and brown wood. #depreciated #thecolumns #architecture #greekrevival #restoration #architecturephotography #oldhouses #historic #historichomes #historicpreservation #documentaryphotography #lyricdocumentary #capecod #capecodinsta #capecodinstagram #capecodphotographer #capecodphotography #nikon #z7ii (at West Dennis, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci0_TFhLal2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
This way and that. The Columns go up and down the clapboard goes left and right. The cracks go everywhere as the paint goes away. #TheColumns has sold again, though the development plan remains the same. How closely any restoration is done is in the hands of the developer alone. #mediumbasedconcept #statementbasedactualsubject #artisticintent #capecod #capecodphotographer #capecodphotography #architecture #greekrevival #restoration #before #dennis #dennisma (at West Dennis, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ccl8kLjLv1P/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
The story of this old #greekrevival house keeps circling back to this part of the story. Without the investment of philanthropic entities, it seems unlikely that anyone will make the commitment to rehabilitating this #historic building. When the family dies off and owners can't keep up, who becomes responsible for the legacy of a significant architectural landmark? #thecolumns #dennis #capecod #architecture #legacy #paradigmofplace #lyricdocumentarystyle (at Dennis, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXoU08vrxpy/?utm_medium=tumblr
Look Beyond What You See I was advised to review the cropping of this shot. There were too many stories in the original version that distracted from the reason I took the shot in the first place. I wanted to show the interior and exterior condition at the same time. The eqiluminant quality made the white clapboard wash out the blue interior walls. Now, the image fulfills its purpose and enhances the story of peeking inside the closed building by presenting the view as of we're showing a narrative of looking through the outside window into the blue room. I don't usually take suggestions well. I find usually that people are turning my shot into how they would have shot it, but this time the stars aligned. 😄 #Depreciated #thecolumns #architecture #greekrevival #restoration #before #dennis #dennisma #capecod #historical (at Dennis, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXD9njqL5_l/?utm_medium=tumblr

Forlorn, My Heart Breaks At these steps that lead nowhere, a simple message is written. Is it a personal statement unrelated to its location, or is the author of the sentiment moved at such a grand structure withers in the elements seemingly destined to the same fate as the pumpkin. #thecolumns #architecture #greekrevival #restoration #before #dennis #capecod @capecodlife (at Dennis, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWmuMuhg3Y-/?utm_medium=tumblr
Reflecting on the past can be dangerous. For some, they are more in the rememberance of what was. Time is quicksand and the more you struggle to recapture the past the more you are a prisoner to it. For others it is a springboard to renewal. You look back to learn how to move forward. We learn from our mistakes. Past performance does not guarantee future gains, but we learn how different decisions worked or didn't. Where we have come from, even if its an assumed history of a location you've moved into, has intrinsic value. Just because it's owned by someone, it still is a part of the community. The past's future will reflect on the present day.
