hey mister mage, some friends asked me to make a homebrew campaign for them, but im having a inspiration block and can't come up with any kind of central concept for the campaign, any tips or advice on campaign creation that you can share with this poor soul
Hello!
I’d say start small. A local problem with not so powerful antagonists leading to something bigger. Let them save a village or just kill some monsters while investigating before defeating demons, gods and saving the world.
As for the inspiration, it’s usually the same advice as for me: start small. Just read anything you have (DM guide, some novels, wiki pages,…) until you find an interesting piece of lore to use. An original magical item to retrive, a unknown cult to fight against, a race they could discover and be forced to work with for some reason,… Then build around that first part you like and want your players to discover. Try to think about whatever could go wrong and throw it in their faces one (or two) problem at a time. Chances are very good they will bring up some points you didn’t think about. From their character’s bios, critical fails and bad ideas.
Don’t worry if you do not have the whole thing figured by the first game. Just have enough for one or two games and keep adding elements. Usually, ideas come up as you play too.
Do not hesitate to tell me more about your ideas so I can help you to look for something more specific. Also, I have a DMing tag and probably so does my friends from the Collective.
Good luck & good game to you!
