Preaching that 'Money is the root of all evil' he offers relics that will cure diseases and make you rich, but only work for good and blameless people, so if it doesn't work maybe you just need to pay him more money to get a pardon for your sins? He'll scam anyone, 'were it even of the poorest page, or the poorest widow in a village, even should her children starve for famine'. He even starts trying to sell absolution to the other pilgrims after he finishes his story, despite already telling them that it's a scam, but to be fair he was pretty drunk by that point."

This is a song specifically for Djagor’s ancestor, the PARDONER. This song describes sort of a holy con man, and I think that’s the most fitting way to characterize the PARDONER. When the cult of the Sufferer sprung up, but before it was fully repressed, the PARDONER used his charismatic sermons to spread the faith--but found ways to increase his own power, standing, and wealth while doing so. Whether or not he truly believed in the message is unclear, but his actions show that he was primarily motivated by selfish reasons--eventually ending up as the leader of a breakaway sect of Suffrism. This lasted a brief time before the entire sect was expunged with great prejudice. If any trace remains of this footnote in the history of an already suppressed religious practice, I would be surprised.
