That’s the problem! I’d be willing to do a genderbend, but figure skating outfits are so feminine already that there’s a really fine line between coming across as a genderbend and coming across as not passing. I don’t really want to change the hairstyle. I could do feminine makeup and that would help a bit (long fake eyelashes with rhinestones on them *____*). I think that my face would possibly pass as a teenage boy if I had the right makeup, but I know that my body can’t, and wearing waist padding sounds like such a drag.

first impressions are that the light blue swoops at the lower ribs could be extended/widened to cover the bust area, and the dark blue swoops underneath could be finagled into a flared out skirt piece over the hips

I don’t know if it’s fishnet or if it’s a patterned spandex. To replicate it, I’d either get some fishnet and overlay it on some silver spandex, or I’d get this one patterned spandex from Spandex World and overlay it on some mesh: http://spandexworld.com/c3/catalog/product/13566

Of course, I’d be adding LOTS of rhinestones, too. Need as much sparkle as I can get.

I was thinking genderbend-wise I could take the shoulder ruffly things and make a skirt that imitates those. If not a full skirt, then at least hip ruffles. I also feel like I could change the cut to make it more feminine, and make it a leotard over leggings instead of a one-piece, but I’d have to be really careful with the colors and materials if I did that, since I’d need to keep the spirit of the design, and I feel like extending the dark blue part down into a leotard bottom wouldn’t do that, but I would also need to keep the lighter colors and matte materials on bottom while also having visual contrast between the leotard and the leggings. (Even if I did a full skirt it would be sheer, like the shoulder ruffles)

Extending the chest swirls into boob swirls is a good idea, though!

(Also, I totally didn’t think it would be my thing, and wouldn’t normally be my thing, but YOI is so endearing that I actually kinda love it. I’d recommend it, even if you don’t normally like sports anime or shounen ai.)

You could also cosplay any of the female characters, or casual Yurio. You'd get to wear a tiger shirt and big comfy jacket!

I could! Yurio’s tough Russian ballerina coach is pretty tempting, but I don’t know if anyone would ‘get’ the cosplay. I don’t love any of the female characters, the show itself, or the designs enough to do something more obscure.

Mink isn't a character you see as much, so why not? Also I'd suggest #2 both as you seem to feel more comfortable AND building the armor could be interesting.

That’s partly why I want to do her. It’s an idea that I’ve been kicking around for a while, and at this point, I might as well go for it. (Plus, I love Kotono Mitsuishi, her seiyuu is a bonus.)

I think I would be more comfortable with the less naked one. And learning armor would be a lot of fun, plus all that detailing.

I actually like the first one better, but maybe add the little skirt from the second one to it? The armor looks more dragon-like from the manga though, and doesn't have those ridiculous boobs @_@

I also like the design of the first one better, but the more naked thing bothers me. Adding the little half skirt is a good idea, though. I could do that, and since she has so many designs in the manga, I doubt anyone would really know or care that it’s not canon. (And I think that anyone who is going to recognize Mink would recognize her regardless of outfit, as long as the hair is the same, the colors are the same, it’s bikini armor, and I have the wings/tail/horns.)

The ridiculous boobs in the second image are quite ridiculous. Not sure if I have enough natural boobage to pull that off. But on the other hand, it’s Mink, so I feel like I should do something with cone boobs. At least it’s not her outfit from the anime. Speaking of ridiculous boobs. (Seriously that top she wears in the anime shouldn’t be physically possible with the amount of cutout space and plunge it has.)

Cosplaying from an ecchi series is kinda inviting nasty comments, even if you don't intend to. Plus, nearly nekkid. Plus, IT'S REALLY HARD.

I don’t mind being nearly naked for modesty reasons, but I am a bit of a creeper magnet. Though the series is so old that I’m not sure if your average creeper would know it and know that it’s an ecchi series, but I feel like bikini armor in general is such a straight dude fantasy that it would be possibly inviting trouble anyway, whether someone knows the series or not. I’ll be sure to stick with tall, intimidating-looking friends while wearing it. Being nearly naked is good when it’ll be LA in July in a convention center with roughly 100k people in it, though.

Honestly, the creeper factor is the biggest qualm I have with cosplaying Mink in general. I always tell myself that I won’t make more creeper magnet cosplays, but here I am. I never learn.

Oops sorry. I meant to write a follow up but the meds they gave me knocked me right out!!

I’m home and I will be okay eventually! I’ve been taking an antibiotic for the last week, and now I’m suddenly VERY allergic to it. So I’m now on a different antibiotic, steroids, allergy medicine, and an anti-nausea thing because all of the other pills are probably going to make me sick and they don’t want to give me an ulcer. And probiotics/yogurt because this is going to kill my poor stomach bacteria.

This translates into being puffy and itchy and tired right now. I’m not having any trouble breathing and they didn’t make me stay at the hospital for observation, so I’m mostly considering this to be a win. ^_^;;;;;
