hey. so uh. i haven't seen campaign 1 (though i know the usual big spoilers) and um. see i made peace with molly's death in the sense that it /won't happen again/. i mean they were half a party with no healers and matt intended them to run from the encounter. but um. that just happened. so. im. worried for future fights, watching them live. how on EARTH was VM mostly okay throughout the whole campaign??? these assholes are giving me grey hairs.
While VM only had one cleric, it had 4 total PCs who could cast at least one type of healing spell (Pike, Keyleth, Vex, Scanlan), which went up to 5 once Vax became a Paladin and got Lay on Hands. Grog was also around (and maybe above?) 100 hp when the stream started and would very frequently end up shoving healing potions into downed teammates (which Travis still does as Fjord, but Fjord can’t stay up as long). The Mighty Nein on the other hand only have two dedicated healer, and often forget Yasha has minor healing ability (which can mainly just get someone back up, but that was a helluva lot today). Plus when someone (Pike) did die, they were in Tal’Dorei, which doesn’t have the same anti-necromancy stance as WIldemount, and they could therefore find someone willing to resurrect her. By the time the stream started at least one PC had the ability to cast a some kind of teleportation spell. and tbf every vm member died at least once.
This fight was probably weird, because up until the demon joined it likely seemed like a fight that wasn’t going to be easy, but one that they could still win relatively quickly once they were able to get a good couple rounds of damage in. I think the fact that Jester’s Banishment spell didn’t work ended up fucking with what seemed to be a consensus to run. They were worried that all of them running down the tunnel would create a choke point. They didn’t know this at the time, but it also would have made it even easier to get at nearly all the party with the lightning lance. Plus they spent most of the fight with at least one party member charmed, and they couldn’t really escape before breaking those charms. Basically the fight seemed to go “we’re fighting because we think we can win” to “oh shit maybe we should run” to “oh shit we can’t run, i guess we have to fight because the other option is dying.”
uh, but, i don’t know if i can say anything that will make watching future episodes less stressful. though, actually, despite the fact that c1 had one permadeath, the cast usually somehow manages to make it out of impossibly tight spaces when the odds are actively working against them.Â
