Ok that pic of the dip made me think of the Animaniac's movie cause like, it was weirdly dark?? Like they spent the opening on the trio being impoverished orphans and it was oddly somber before going back to the regularly scheduled shenaniganary only for them to hit you with that bleakness out of nowhere towards the end of the movie. The tonal whiplash has stuck with me for twenty years and this reminded me of it
yes!! the movie super influences how i write them! i didn't see much of the show as a kid but i did watch the movie all the time, and like you those dark scenes've been stuck with me. so they've always been engrained in my head as these really emotional, tragic characters trying to laugh in horrible situations. i'm glad that's coming through lol
If there's ever a book five (or more, who knows), you know what I would want to see? How the train handles someone with a disability/chronic illness, if it handles it at all. Like, imagine waking up on a train and you need to get xyz medication in 123 time, but the train said "You have to make time costly personal improvements of your life in order to get back home" and you Just Do Not Have Time because taking time to reflect and whatnot would literally kill you.
yeah! honestly, on the topic of physical disability, the only character that comes to mind is Lucy, who lost her eye on the Train. It definitely does not seem like the Train is at all handicap accessible given all the physical feats and travelling it seems to require.
As for chronic illness... yeah that too, pretty much. It doesn’t seem like any of our protags had that issue, but I wonder if there are passengers who do? I think that might be harder to pick up on than a physical disability.
I don’t know exactly what criteria is used to consider potential passengers though, aside from being at a crossroads. It would be interesting to see for sure!

i know dark souls 2 is a little bit of the “black sheep” of the series, but i really adore how it tackles becoming hollow. it’s something that i feel was taken in consideration much more than dark souls 1 where becoming hollow meant the character either started being aggressive or died (which. still broke me, dont get me wrong), but ds2 spoke about people who slowly became hollow ofc theres the blacksmith’s daughter and the merchant in majula, but lucatiel really hit deeper with that
her desperation to at first stay away from you, then to try to remain sane - her begging to have someone to remember her when she feels herself losing it... it hurt she’s the solaire of ds2 to me. a friend, although a little reluctant at first, a companion, someone who cares for you and desperately wants to keep a hold on her humanity
