The Tharn-Phaya fight analysis that no one needed.
First, I hate gel wraps. Phaya wins for traditional wraps all the way.
Tharn is a textbook Muay fighter. He keeps his guard up, his feet are in a perfect stance and he executes his moves cleanly.
Phaya is a brat. He keeps everything loose, so confident in his own skills. He gives off almost lazy vibes. When he realizes he can't get through Tharn's defence like that, he tightens up. He mirrors Tharn, moving to a cleaner, more well trained approach. Still, he can't get past Tharn's guard. So what does he do? He goes rogue. Nothing he does is strictly out of bounds, but you wouldn't drive into the stomach like that (motion is wrong), and you certainly wouldn't do a leg swipe like that. It's just OTT and unnecessary. It's expending unnecessary energy. BUT. The payoff is greater because you shock your opponent.
Phaya knew he wasn't going to win against Tharn because he's skilled. He's really good, really clean. Really by the book. Phaya assessed the situation and adapted to be what he needed to beat Tharn and I love that. I've said it before but people's fight styles are so personal and like with KP, they really thought about how they'd represent these characters. Tharn is respectable and upright, does the right thing. Phaya is a chancer, passionate, scrappy and a rule breaker. Tharn's perfect foil and other half. I can't wait to see more of both of them like this to see how they develop and how they watch each other's backs in a fight.
It's the way Tharn shudders when Phaya grabs his hair, all his fantasies finally being fulfilled, captured in this one beautiful moment.
