Storicamente, i rituali della Muay Thai hanno origini antichissime e sono pervasi da un sentimento prettamente religioso che si collega a credenze buddiste. Innanzitutto lo si può constatare dagli amuleti portafortuna che il thai boxer possiede e da cui trova forza nel momento in cui deve affrontare un incontro. Il Mongkon è un amuleto di forma circolare che viene indossato in testa per proteggere il Fighter dai pericoli. Alcune scuole di Muay Thai e alcuni Maestri svilupparono finanche una loro tecnica per creare il Mongkon in modo da dotarli di straordinari poteri; si narra che alcuni abbiano creato Mongkon utilizzando la pelle di serpenti velenosi per accrescerne l’effetto. In passato il Mongkon non veniva rimosso prima del combattimento. Se cadeva durante il match, l’avversario si fermava per dare il tempo al fighter di rimetterselo in testa e assolutamente non approfittava di questo momento di vulnerabilità per attaccare.
