We’ve been praising Emmit Fenn profusely since the day he brought us Painting Greys, so it should come as no surprise that we’re head over heels for Emmit’s debut EP, Prologue, a whopping nine track release which includes all the songs we’ve been enamored with in these past months, plus some fresh new gems. It feels like the Los Angeles by way of Berkeley singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer could move mountains with the sheer emotive power of his electronic music. Just listen to new EP track Stones, which slow builds from understated anguish to passionately pummeling, battle ready future bass grandeur. I don’t watch enough of America’s Got Talent to have recognized Grace VanderWaal previously, but I’m certainly blown away by her talent and her voice now that I’ve heard her new single Moonlight. The singer songwriter from Kansas, who’s only 13, won the eleventh season of the NBC television competition before being signed to Columbia Records and releasing her first EP, Perfectly Imperfect, in December of 2016. Moonlight is her first new material since that EP, and what an enchanting pop gem it is. Moonlight is adorned with warm ukelele and a raw earthiness, but the highlight of the song is most certainly Grace’s exceptional voice, which is dewy sweet but raspy and gutsy . The blossoming starlet recently singed with TH3RD BRAIN, the keen eared talent agency who’s also responsible for managing the likes of ZHU, Krewella, and Gallant. Germany by way of Los Angeles artist NoMBe takes his time between releases, keeping me on my toes and leaving me fidgeting with eager anticipation in between singles. Wait, which made its debut on Triple J, is his first song of the year. With it, he reminds me why I find his silky smooth vocals and acoustic meets electro soul overwhelmingly irresistible. Wait’s cottony beats and sultry warm guitar tempt me to dance yet melt my fluttering heart. This jazzy plush jam is like a sumptuous cross between Milky Chance and Tom Misch. Wait comes as a taste of NoMBe’s debut album, They Might’ve Even Loved Me, a “brutally honest account of romance, sex, and heartbreak”. The album was inspired by the women who have shaped his life, ranging from his godmother Chaka Khan to his high school crushes, girlfriends, and summer flings. To say we’re excited about rising artist Thutmose is probably an understatement. The 23 year old Nigerian born, Brooklyn based talent is at the top of our new hip hop acts to watch list. We’re still utterly addicted to Thutmose’s last melodious hooking jam, Blame, but new single WuWu is well worthy of some obsessing over, too. It’s a gritty bouncing, spry plinking future beats and chill trap anthem brimming with sleek swaggering assurance, produced by KillaGraham. Thutmose has been on tour supporting pop sensation Billie Eilish on her sold out tour. We expect his buzz to grow exponentially with each passing day. WuWu is available, here.
