Song Review: Tedeschi Trucks Band - “I Got You”

Breezy and leaning to the superficial side, “I Got You” is the sound of Tedeschi Trucks Band humbly trying to be like mainstream groups.

Clocking in at just over four minutes, the lead single from Future Soul (March 20) manages to make room for spare contributions from the TTB choir and horn section. But Derek Trucks’ outgoing guitar solo is the identifying fingerprint.

Up to that point, the song reflects the Brothers and Sisters-era ABB as TTB sets aside its formidable force in favor of a silly love song.

Every time is getting worse/show me, baby, where it hurts/you know I ain’t no doctor but I’m kind … /I got you/you belong to me, Susan Tedeschi sings, the words and music supplied by TTB’s Mike Mattison.

In the pantheon of pop songs, “I Got You” is relatively high up the list. In the TTB canon, it sits significantly lower, Trucks’ aforementioned showcase notwithstanding.
