On my third reread of the great gatsby and I came across the juxtaposition of Nick's description of Catherine and Mr. Mckee.
"Her eyebrows had been plucked and then drawn again at a more rakish angle, but the efforts of nature toward the restoration of the old alignment gave a blurred air to her face."
"He [Mr. McKee] had just shaved, for there was a white spot of lather on his cheekbone"
I mean, Catherine, the woman who pushes herself on Nick has a "blurred air to her face" but McKee was seen so clearly that Nick remembers the lather on his cheekbone.
He can't remember the exact facial features to the woman he is supposed to like but remembers a small white spot on another man's face. Like who are you trying to convince that you're straight because it sure as hell isn't working.
