" anita? it is two-thirty in the morning, is everything okay? " sorun had awoken briefly and couldn't feel her there by their side, though her side of the bed was still warm. they wondered if she had left for some reason, but after leaving the bedroom to find her, they saw a light was on in the kitchen and found her there. " is there something on your mind? i am here for you if you wish to talk. " sorun offers her a warm smile and comes closer, leaning against the counter next to her. what kind of friend or girlfriend would they be if they weren't there for her?
Sorun’s voice was a comfort, normally, but hearing it so suddenly in the dead of night, between her frantic breathing and sniffling, startled her. She whipped around, the shaking hands that she had pressed firmly to the kitchen countertop jittering at her side as she had no use for them.
“I’m, uh——! I’m fine.” She sucked in a deep breath, hoping that she might convince herself if she lied hard enough. Unfortunately for her, it wasn’t as effective as she would have liked. Even as Sorun drew nearer, Anita felt her panic swelling again. The anxiety attack that had crept up on her wasn’t their fault, not in the least, though it did have everything to do with them. Nightmares were a bitch, forcing her to wake and think every doubtful thought she had been trying so hard to suppress.
‘ What if they find someone else? ’ ‘ What if I’m not good enough for them? ’ ‘ What if they are with me only to be nice? ’
She so often stamped these thoughts and feelings down, letting something distract her until she forgot she had those thoughts to begin with. But when she snapped awake and sound Sorun curled up beside her, she couldn’t find the distraction she needed. Her only option was to let herself become overwhelmed, but she wouldn’t risk them seeing her like this. She thought she had been stealthy about it, slipping from the covers and frantically pacing in the kitchen while the numbness and shortness of breath settled in.
Seemed she wasn’t as sneaky as she thought.
“I just. . . I was thinking too much.” She rubbed at her chest, hands still shaking violently even as she pressed her fingertips to her sternum. Her heart jackhammered, and her eyes darted everywhere but to Sorun, giving away that she wasn’t in the same condition she had gone to bed in. “Had a bad dream, got into my own head. It’s fine. Don’t worry about it. I’ll go back to bed in a second. Just need to. . . stop being a dumbass.”
