Director Robert Rodriguez, Uber Producer Jon Landau and Empire's Head Honcho Terri White introduce Alita: Battle Angel on the Uk's widest screen. On Wednesday evening I went along to Cineworld's Leicester Square IMAX laser projection theatre to see a 20 minute preview of scenes from Rodriguez's much awaited Alita: Battle Angel. I believe we were the first audience in the world to see Alita on the IMAX screen and what I saw was absolutely fantastic. We saw 5/6 scenes in full 3D and I was blown away. The film is a blend of live action and enhanced cgi as you probably have seen in the trailer. The quality of the graphics was faultless (and I was looking) so much so that the little photo realistic imperfections, like the one on Alita's nose could be seen. The merge of real and graphics was seamless. The look and feel of this strange new world engaging and needing to be explored as you may expect from a film with James Camerons involvement. I was very taken by the movement of the CG characters, the physics of the movement are as close to real as I have seen on screen whilst very often doing the most outlandish things. It is clearly the next level of graphics. The biggest issue I have with these types of films is that sometimes the spectacle or graphics become the focus or "the thing" and not enough attention is put into the story or characters. I'm happy to say whilst I didn't see enough to be absolutely conclusive, the small bit I did see had me hopeful that what I experienced is enhanced and continued through the full film. The biggest surprise for me was how emotionally engaging Alita was; perhaps the result of Rosa Salazar's performance, perhaps the result of Cameron's blending of facial/motion capture with performance capture into one (more about that on my blog soon) or more likely both of those factors combined. The footage left me very eager to see more of Alita's world, characters and story arc that Rodriguez has brought to to the screen. I can't wait to see the full film. #Alita #RobertRodriguez #JonLandau #Empire #TerriWhite #IMAX #Framestore #Weta #theestablishingshot #rollerball #Rosa Salazar (at Cineworld Leicester Square) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrXpu7anNDz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xkien47qadbw
