Thérèse Dreaming - Balthus (1938) and Maya Hawke’s Blue Hippo

Art and historical context are a hard conversation in the face-value world we live in today. I hope to create a comfortable space for discussion and learning. These posts will discuss various topics that some may find triggering or unpleasant. I will be talking about the following hard topics: Nudity, misogyny, sex, pornography, abuse, and pedophelia (though nothing graphic).

Thérèse Blanchard was a neighbor of the artist. The exact nature of their relationship is unknown, nor her exact age. Though the range is about eleven to fourteen, most sources say eleven. Balthus and Thérèse may have had a strictly artistic relationship. She may have just modeled for him, but the nature of the work depicting Thérèse is undeniably sexual. Did she know the connotations of her pose at such a tender age? A lot has been said and assumed about the young woman. It is extremely possible that she was abused, and it is definite that her body was exploited in the paintings. Maya Hawke’s music video for ‘Blue Hippo’ and the song ‘Thérèse’ shine a new light on her. They are the emancipation of a previously unheard girl in art history. The song had a life. She had interests and memories and feelings - she was a real person. There is a sense of catharsis in setting Thérèse free. Not only for women who have been sexually exploited, but also the inner child and girl at heart., in the video she makes her an artist herself. In giving Thérèse a story: she liberates.

Carolyn Gage’s The Crimes Against Thérèse Blanchard is an excellent and harsh takedown of the work, opting to not even include an image of the painting. Thérése’s parents are said to be restaurant workers. One can theorize that her parent’s accepted the form of payment for her modeling - if she was paid at all. Her Parisian neighbor Balthus painted 10 (known) works of her from 1938 to 1940. These range from innocent studies, portraits, and the famous perversions. One source says that Blanchard died at Twenty five. It makes me very emotional to think about how she never got the opportunity to tell her story.

Neighbours - shown on Channel 5 in the UK, Eleven in Australia.

Outline: Tension heats up between Sonya and Toadie as they debate about who is best fit to take care of their daughter. Elly’s job is under threat and Terese questions her relationship with Gary. 

Wednesday’s episode featured a lot of struggles: for parenthood, for authority and for security. Sonya desperately tries to stay on top of things after losing her job in the wake of her relapse. However, life just won’t let up. A news crew ambushes her as she attempts to enter her home and it’s clear she’ll never escape the scrutiny. Steph Scully steps in, the amazing friend she is, to ward off the press. She also defends Sonya against Toadie, though he tells her to stay out of it. Ouch. When he later offers to move back in to support Sonya, I really thought they’d reconcile. Unfortunately, Sonya’s not ready to forgive Toadie. Maybe she never will. Watching them argue over Nell was heart-breaking. Poor Nellyfish must be so confused!

 Meanwhile, Brooke is determined to see her daughter one last time before she leaves the country. Regardless of how her father feels, turns out that Jessie didn’t even want to see her anyway. I felt sorry for Brooke, despite her past shenanigans.

 Terese was feeling insecure over her relationship with Gary once again. I love it when she gets emotional. It’s easy to think she’s just a tough businesswoman, but she has her vulnerable moments. I wasn’t surprised by the breakup, it was a long time coming. Hopefully, this makes room for Terese and Paul. And “dins”? Really Gary, no one ever uses that as a short form of dinner in a text – no one!

 Finn’s still gunning after Susan’s principal job and he’s taking Elly down as he does. Elly’s always caught up in some scandal, she’s right it is humiliating. As for Xanthe, it’s a shame Finn’s poisoned her against Elly. They had such cute interactions. She actually used to look up to Elly once upon a time. Though for future reference, she probably shouldn’t get close to any more of her teachers.

 A 7/10 for this episode. Not looking forward to seeing the Rebecchis’ battling over custody in court. I’m guessing Jessie’s going to make an appearance at some point, I do remember reading about it somewhere. I reckon Tim Collins will end up as Mayor and wreak unnecessary havoc on Erinsborough.  Still not sure about Xanthe’s arc. I get that she wants attention (both her parents have been neglectful in the past) and Finn gives it to her, but hate that he’s just using her as part of his game. Nice episode, I like that it was female-centric; girl power!

I High: Going to Mass this morning. Terese got overheated, so I went down to the bathroom with her, and we both ended up missing communion. But when we went back up to get our coats and leave, our priest said if we wanted we could absolutely still receive communion from him. It was a beautiful experience, and made me love and appreciate Jesus in the Eucharist a little better. 

Terese and I went to get coffee and write today, then went shopping. I found a really awesome desk with wheels so it’s easy to move. It’s small and practical and I LOVE it. And it was $5!

Terese and I also worked out, watched some @tessaviolet videos, and had a very lengthy discussion about the double-standards/negative messages that often slip into Christian circles regarding modesty. 

I have written about 60 pages of my story, which makes it solidly novella length. I know there’s more to write, some plot holes to fill, and the whole thing needs tightening and cleaning up. But I don’t want to add a bunch of words just to make it longer if the story is already told well. We’ll see how long it ends up being, but I’m excited about it. My heart is in it, and I know that matters. 

Low: I just keep on staying up too late. I know my body needs more sleep. But here I am, it’s almost midnight, and I have to get up early enough to drive my car to the shop for an oil change by 8am. *sigh* I’m definitely thinking for Lent, I should commit to getting in bed and by 10:30 or 11 every night. Something’s gotta give.
