I have a head cannon that Q’s species, or Starfleet’s temporal agents, discovered the temporal distortion that created the Kelvin timeline, realized that they couldn’t prevent it from happening, but they could work to mitigate the damage as much as possible, and get people key to the timeline  where they needed to be.

Hence: –Jim being born a few months early, thereby ensuring he and his mother are sent back to Earth after the Kelvin incident...thereby keeping him safe from some of the infinite dangerous variables he would have faced as a child in space. I call this: Emergency Kirk.

–The Enterprise’s pilot getting lungworm right before they took off. This made sure Sulu took the helm, which led to his mistake with the inertial dampeners, which led to the Enterprise not being destroyed.

–Kirk being abandoned on the one moon that held not only Spock Prime, but also Scotty. I can just see a time agent seeing the potential futures, and then manipulating the paperwork for Scotty’s transfer to make sure that happened.

–Chekov being born a few years early to make sure he was old enough to be assigned to the Enterprise.
