i'm trying not to go capital-C crazy on the worldbuilding, thus taking a partially vibe based approach to e.g. chemistry, but i did do my cursory research and recon it's within reason for Gnisti elves to have figured out flame-retardant treatments for cotton/leather/wool using some combo of red phosphorous, boric acid, and other naturally occuring or easily synthesized compund. i think, if you're a fire mage in a fire mage-based society, that sort of thing would be worth noodling out
