The Pursuit of Happiness - TEDxNTU
Back in university, I took a course called "Happiness" where I learnt about the various philosophers and their takes on happiness and got to watch films like eternal sunshine of a spotless mind as part of my course.
At a later job interview, the interviewer asked, with a crinkling of her nose and sneer of contempt as to why I took such a "rubbish" course on happiness. I had no answer - just because I wanted to?
I later recounted this incident to a friend who immediately responded "Why not? Isn't the entire purpose of life to be happy?"
If TEDxNTU achieves its aim, participants of the event on 17th March will be a little closer to achieving the entire purpose of life. Speakers from a variety of backgrounds (behavioral economists, psychologists, counselors and even lawyers (who knew lawyers could be happy?)) will talk on topics including:
- If the best things in life are free, why aren't we happy all the time?
- Consumerism and its effects on happiness
- Does 'fame' or 'celebrity' status increase happiness?
- Just say 'Thank you' and be more happy
- more here
Completely relevant to modern life, interesting, free and not chi-chi atas unaccessible - why not go?
Okay, so the fact that its going to be held at pulau NTU is pretty shit but thats no excuse! The event lasts all day so even if you're hungover from a night of wild crazy scrabble playing the night before (no, that is not supposed to be a secret code phrase for -ahemahem- and yes, I'm a out and proud nerd and sleepaholic) you can still make it for the afternoon ones!

Sign up here, 17th March, 1030am - 5pm
Obviously I need to do my research because the event application deadline has passed so there - a perfectly good reason not to attend! That said, keep your eyes peeled to their facebook page here where hopefully they will be posting the talks onto after the event!
