Ted and Guy both have a history of multiple head injuries and comas (see all of Guy's publication history and Ted in JLI/JLA) and it's a kind of specific shared trauma that I think they'd find comfort in each other being able to understand. Neither of them are very good at processing their feelings or putting it into words or showing weakness but with each other they don't have to, or if they do they know there's going to be a judgement-free understanding they might not be able to get from others who haven't lived it too

I'm also a sucker for relationships where they start off as unable to be even in the same city as without bullying each other (again, see JLI/JLA). It pairs very nicely with my shipping of SuperGold (I can also see these 4 in a polycule)

I think Guy offers a little kindness in his own way after Ted's hypnosis coma, and then they truly bond after the Doomsday coma
