Calling all YYJ developers!
Are you a developer? Do you like craft beer? How do you feel about rooftop gatherings with gorgeous views of Tectoria? If we’ve piqued your interest, keep reading!
Craftt, in collaboration with LlamaZOO and Lighthouse Labs, will be hosting a “Tech on the Deck” event next Wednesday evening (June 29th) from 6 to 8pm. This is a free networking event for web and app developers in Victoria and it will be hosted on the roof of the Summit building (838 Fort St.).
Enjoy some bites and some delicious craft beer, thanks to our friends over at Bridge Brewing Company, and find yourself in great company with a great view of our beautiful city. Local devs are welcome to swing by to meet other devs, find out about local career opportunities, or just have a friendly drink and a chat. We encourage you to bring business cards if you’d like to network and some ID if you’d like to enjoy some alcoholic beverages.
The evening kicks off at 6 pm. Guests can RSVP via the Victoria Web & App Developers Meetup group. Please make sure to RSVP to the event as space is limited.

Volunteer Roles
If you are considering volunteering for Victoria's Popcorn Hackjam - Thank you SO MUCH!
We simply could not do this without the kindness of volunteered time. We hope that along the way you'll have a lot of fun as well.
We have room for ANYONE who wants to come along and help out, but here are some specific volunteer areas we'll need help with.

Chaos Controller
Volunteers needed to greet and register kids, ensure lab rules are followed, supervise lunch break, and generally ensure all goes well.
Technology Leaders
Depending on your comfort level, there are many technical volunteer positions available! And sometimes, roles will rotate as we move through event milestones.
Event Setup (preload browser tabs, setup stations)
Event Setup (AV/Sound check etc)
Technology Leader (XRay Goggles, Thimble). Do you know HTML and CSS? Then you can help kids with these Mozilla Webmaker tools!
Storyboarding (Paper Popcorn) Leaders
Prior to remixing our event video, kids will have the opportunity to plan out their ideas on paper. In addition to helping kids evolve an independent idea, this is an opportunity to talk about Web Native video making .
Technology Leader (Popcorn Maker)
It's all led up to this! Kids will have moved through the Xray Goggles and Thimble challenges, they've planned out their story and eager to start hacking our event video with their own story! You will need to be familiar with Popcorn Maker , and if you have worked through our orientation and made a few changes that will be enough. It's s a great compliment to this event when volunteers and kids are learning together.
Badger
Do you know about Badges? Badges will be issued during our event in recognition of achievements in learning and making, but also for community effort like helping someone else. (stickers) We'll need someone to focus on this one task.
Sharing Leader(s)
This is super-important! Kids will be hacking, making, and remixing, and of course the final step is to Share! For the work kids are proud of we'll need help publishing source code to this Tumblr blog.
Third Social Media Camp #SMCamp in #yyj
I've caught my breath after the post Social Media Camp whirlwind and want to share my thoughts on the third camp that I've attended in Victoria AKA Tectoria or #yyj. The community I live in is one of the most educated ones in Canada and is also one of the most connected or well-organized technology communities. The benefits include a vibrant business and technology synergy, but also (and this is more important to me) a great community of people. Thankfully, Paul Holmes and Chris Burdge met and wisely organized the Social Media Camps. Just when I think I have a handle on all the different technologies---something new happens or the updates come out, so you can never be a real expert on social media. I think that people have expertise, knowledge, enthusiasm and the like. Paul and Chris have organized these events to bring like-minded people together to learn from one another and network. Each camp has provided me with information, new acquaintances, and skills. This time around, though, I'm reminded that communication and engagement continue to matter. It's really about the people. I was not paid to write this short post. But, I was on a panel at Social Media Camp. As I like to say, I'm a heavy user of Social Media and "get it." Look for a Social Media Camp in your community or visit #yyj for the 2013 Social Media Camp!

I'm at a #smcamp power session led by Janice Mansfield AKA as @toots11 about Google Plus. Learning lots from the Mistress of the the platform. She has an amazing amount of circles (386k and growing) on Google Plus and it's been useful for her connections and business (Real Food Made Easy). She's so down to earth, yet is also a social media power user! Did I mention that she's an amazing chef, too? I'll admit my bias as I consider her a very, dear friend. I'm glad that the organizers had the foresight to invite her to lead a power session. She's making me realize that I can better use Google Plus.
