The two SEGA console versions of Thunder Force IV
While back we did videos on both the Mega Drive and Sega Saturn versions of Thunder Force IV. What’s interesting is the Saturn was a rebuilt port of the game with some changes that largely improved on the Mega Drive version.
Mega Drive
Sega Saturn (Included on Thunder Force Gold Pack 2)
Thunder Force Gold Pack 2 was a collection of the arcade version of Thunder Force AC and the Sega Mega Drive version of Thunder Force IV. Both games where re-coded for the Sega Saturn and so are ports of the original and not emulation.
As a result Technosoft took the opportunity to fix most all the issues found in the original release. Gone is the sprite flicker and slowdown from the Mega Drive version, improved is the original music with added bass. The music is also no longer paused to allow the voice samples to trigger and are instead played side by side.
Voice samples have been cleaned up and their volume lowered so they don't sound as garbed as the MD version, but can sound a bit muffled instead. The scoring system is also said to have been adjusted as well. Technosoft also added the ability to play as the Styx from Thunder Force III if you finished the game. Finally you can also save your high scores unlike in the original.
The Saturn version is largely forgotten due to only being released in Japan.
The recent Nintendo Switch version is just the MD version under emulation, with some form of ROM hack to add in the Styx seen in the Saturn. While M2 were by far the best emulation studio in the mid 2000s these days their emulation is lagging behind some of the main Mega Drive home brew emulators such as BlastEm & Exodus. Which every version you go for you are in for a great experience.

No death full playthrough / longplay of Technosoft classic 16 bit run 'em up game Elemental Master. In case you're wondering a run 'em up is a run and gun where the screen scrolls automatically. At its heart Elemental Master is a shoot 'em up but plays quite a bit differently to Technosoft's other shooters in the form of the Thunder Force series. For starters the game includes some lovely art still cutscenes to tell the story of two brothers fighting against one another. While it may be the classic good versus evil story it's still nice to see a game in this genre include some sort of story. While you start with only a single weapon you are also able to permanently unlock more as you progress through the game. Making the start of the game harder than the finish, the final super attack kills everything in it's path when unlocked. Fast pace and fun Elemental Master isn't a long game and you can quickly master it in a few hours. It ranks as one of the better titles in the genre on the system and it's just a pity it never got a PAL release like so many other Mega Drive / Genesis titles.
