Next double spread from the book “Ayshes Mama trägt ein Kopftuch”. I made two storyboard sketches for this one and I think the first one was the best choice!
“Ayshes Mama trägt ein Kopftuch” (Ayshes mother wears a headscarf) is a new picture book which was just published by Tecklenborg. The book is for preschool children and deals with the topic of women wearing a headscarf/ Hijab. It expalins the basic reasons why (some) muslim women wear a hijab and some of them don’t. Above you can see the process of the bookcover. It starts with the final printed book and ends with the very first sketch I made for the storyboard. As you can see, the basic concept for the cover didn’t change but there were still a lot of different versions I made. Sometimes it were just minor typography changes or color variations. In the final Print, the colors truned out a bit different than planned. I don’t know why it happened but I’m still very happy with the final result. The initial color concept fell apart now but it’s still a harmonic picture. For the nex time I’ll have to check the color values better but this is something only the illustrator (me ;) ) will notice. Hope this process is interesting for some of you. The drawing was made with pencil and grey color pencils. I added some collage elements and white paint and colored everything in Photoshop with Kyle T. Websters Watercolor Brushes. They really help to speed up my process and I’m able to change things quick. Together with the traditional drawing it’s a perfect combination to get a very natural look. More about the book and the interior illustrations tomorrow. Thanks everyone for following!
