From October, Low Power transmitters will be available anywhere, allowing members of urban communities throughout the country to start their own stations and to share their local knowledge over the airwaves. In the past, stations could only hope to reach a few thousand people, but the advent of urban LPFM stations could see hundreds of thousands exposed to hyper local community news.

The impact in rural and suburban areas over the last decade can be seen in the work of organisations like the Prometheus Radio Project, a non-profit that provides help and guidance to groups wanting to launch their own station. It has been responsible for launching all manner of LPFM stations from groups providing foreign language shows to youth programs giving teens a chance to find a voice in their community. Now, with the advent of urban access to these transmitters, they’ll be working even more to bring new locally driven content to cities across the US.
