He didn’t make eye contact with him or even say hello. In fact he lingered before crossing the threshold inside. It was there in drawing closer to him that he came to lift a meticulously wrapped gift and pressed it forward, waiting to be accepted as he chewed his lip. Now he waited for the most expensive donuts to be accepted as his own attempts had failed miserably. “You needed something for your birthday...”
A few days prior, Takeru’s birthday had passed quietly. As he hadn’t made many friends since his transfer to Akounri, he hadn’t really expected a celebration or even any acknowledgements like his companions back in Japan would have done.
As expected he did get greetings and photos, plus a short video, from the group in Japan. Birthday greetings and a passing comment asking if he’d grown any taller yet. He had been sure to send back his thanks and a mild bug to freeze the offender’s phone for a hour or two. No one teased him about his height.
On the Akounri end, it had been quiet. He’d bought himself pizza and a small cake since his friends had insisted on it and demanded that he take a picture to show that he’d done so. He’d figured that would be the end of it.
Takeru certainly hadn’t accounted for Kou showing up with a gift for him.
Looking away from the screen he’d been typing on, Takeru’s gaze settled on the wrapped gift before following the line of Kou’s arm back to his face.Something for his birthday…
An interested smirk appeared on Takeru’s lips as he reached over to accept the proffered box.
⌦“I shouldn’t be surprised that you would know when my birthday was I suppose.”
He neatly began unwrapping the gift, eyebrows lifting when he realized what the gift was. There seemed to be an almost childish glimmer of happiness in his eyes now.
These were certainly hard to come by. They always sold out fast and there was a long waiting list for reservations to eat at the place where they were made.
Takeru looked back to Kou, his expression relaxing with how pleased he was by the surprise gift.
⌦“Thank you. This is a genuinely nice gift.”
