Heteronormativity at school at its finest
So I’m a french language assistant in the UK and today in class with the first years we worked on Paris and what you can see and do in Paris. And the activity of the book was about that fictional girl Chloé who spent a week in Paris. For everything she did/visited there was a picture and one of them was a picture of a boy that corresponded to “I met a handsome boy”. And so I had to read the activities Chloé did in french and the teatcher would ask a pupil to translate it in english. So when it came to the activity “I met a handsome boy” she asked a boy in the classroom to translate it and then she quickly said “oh no that’s not for a boy, we’ll ask a girl to translate this” and I swear to God it took everything in me to contain myself and keep a straight face (haha) though I was internally experiencing the biggest cringe in my life. And, bless those kids, I heard two boys whispering that gays existed, and one of them was like “why a guy couldn’t read this” (it was the boy who was asked to read it at first btw). So after, I had to take them in small groups and ask them in french what they did in Paris and they had to chose a picture of the “Chloé activity” and answer me. So one group of boys was like “haha say you met a handsome boy” “no you say it” and I was like “okay why not, that’s possible” and they were like “noooooo”. And then the two guys I mentioned before came and one of them answered unphazed “I met a handsome boy” and his friend was genuinely like “yeah dude, that’s awesome”. I internally shed a tear of happiness and the day was saved.
