Taako’s earliestmemories are these: Lup’s hand in his, small and warm, the hollow click of a door being shut, and winding stairsthat went up, and up, and up. The twins werelocked away in a tower as children. They were told it was for their own safety –that there was a dragon guarding the first floor, even, to prevent anyone fromcoming in and stealing them away. To Taako and Lup, itfelt more like someone didn’t want them getting out.

(Once upon a time, there was a prophecy that foretold a set of twins; dual heirs that would one day raze the kingdom to the ground. Fearing for their lives, the people locked the prince and princess up and threw away the key.) 

Not that that would ever stop them. Lup befriendsthe dragon in their first year of residence, and Taako learns how to pick thelocks, and that’s that - they’re free to come and go as they please. Taakolikes to haggle with the merchants in the next town over; Lup prefers to botherthe blacksmith.

They’re young but clever, and if anyone asks after theirnames, their parents, why they’re always alone in the marketplace, oh, you poor things – well. Taako andLup become good liars very quickly. Better alone and free than trapped in a crowded orphanage.

Besides, the tower isold but huge and filled with stuff to sell – rare spell books and components,lots of antiques; Lup thinks the place once belonged to a wizard – so they’re never short on gold. The kingdom has fallen onhard times, recently. It’d be foolish for anyone to turn down good money.

Taako learns how tobrew potions. Lup gets herself an affinity for fire and a sword. 

Lup hates the idea ofbeing stuck in one place. In another life, she’d have made a good knight. In this one, she’sseen too many people begging in the street while stories of the king andqueen’s excess drift down from the capital. She gets into fights with thecity guard. Taako says that one day her sense of justice is going to gether killed. 

As she gets older, Lupstarts making a name for herself as a sort of Robin Hood with a terrifyingdragon steed. Sometimes Taako goes with her - not because he loves the thrillof a heist or the heat of battle, but because who else is going to watch herback? The dragon? Please.

One day Lup leaves ona solo mission that should take no more than a week tops, but two pass, andthen three, and she does not come home. Taako’s worry becomes outright panic.He makes preparations to go find her, but he has no idea where to even begin looking.

And then, the nightbefore he leaves, a man shows up at the tower door.

That’s defs Oscar. He likes movies but he’s not like obsessed with them, so he doesn’t mind waiting until the last showing (he goes to cineplex in south bank because they’re cheap as chips there)

both of those things exist in this world lmao

Jude and Lenore both have a soft spot for musicals, because they’re both actors/musicians

fuckin... i don’t have this? i’m the world’s worst at describing characters and i never do it unless it’s from a specific character’s perspective. Like, I have descriptions of Oscar and Lenore written as though they were internal monologues by Jude? which i think is more similar to #4. but I don’t have like... what any of the characters look like written from their own perspective. so maybe I’ll just post two #4s?

Jude tried not to laugh at the way Oscar’s voice changed, pleasant and calming and positive, the paramedic’s version of a retail voice. He drank everything in. The dark circles that were permanent fixtures around his eyes, the sleep-mussed halo of dark curls that never sat right anyway, the small scar on the corner of his lip from a childhood softball accident, the features that made Oscar so human and Jude so glad he’d lived to see them again.

Jude got hurt vampire hunting, Oscar’s a professional about it, Jude is in love.

She straddled the window sill, one leg in and one out, her hands held up in surrender. They were completely still, none of the slight waver of human hands. Beautiful, not in a supermodel way, but like her dark eyes held a secret that you desperately wanted to discover, while at the same time you knew you’d regret what you’d find.

None of this was unexpected. What stopped Jude wasn’t the parts that identified her as a vampire. It was the dark curls that fell in the same way as Oscar’s, the slightly confused side eye that Jude himself had been on the receiving end of, from eyes the exact same colour.

well, kravitz did send them anonymously to save face (both his and taako’s)

—but yeah, taako listens to the show. he heard “what does my boyfriend mean when he says ‘do you think truck drivers realize that they’re the dentists of highways’” and knew who it was referring to immediately, and also who must have sent the question in. at that point it was game on. taako probably starts sending stuff in, too:

how do i ask my boyfriend to stop leaving dead bodies in the chest freezer? i don’t mind that he brings his work home with him, but i’d rather not get formaldehyde all over my fuckin’ toaster strudels, thank you.

the other day my husband answered the door as a skeleton wielding a scythe and now the fantasy fed-ex guy won’t come back. how do i get them to start bringing me my packages again?

when they’re younger i don’t think the twins celebrate much? candlenights is just another day of the week for a couple of impoverished orphans. they’ve got way more important things to worry about, like, uh, not starving to death. who are they supposed to learn all the usual traditions from, anyways? before, every house they got sent to celebrated differently, and the caravans they travel with now have all kinds of people observing all kinds of holidays. there’s no consistency. the twins’ idea of “candlenights” is probably a mash-up of like, twelve different peoples’ traditions, or shit they just made up themselves:

wandering around the city looking at the lights until it’s too cold to stay out in the open anymore; picking their favorite displays; critiquing (read: openly mocking) the tacky ones

haggling with vendors to see which twin can get the best deal at each market stall (people are way more generous during the holidays, it’s ridiculous)

exchanging gifts… lup goes busking on the street to get taako some costume jewelry from the thrift store. taako steals a spell book from their last town’s library for lup. s’nothing big, just ‘whatever they can scrounge together.

post-canon, holidays are a big deal! there’s finally a reason to celebrate without the struggle for survival looming over their heads. everyone gets together, though taako avoids lucretia like the plague - gotta keep the jabs to the minimum on pain of death by lup. 

taako drags angus around neverwinter to look at all the lights. lup and barry wear the tackiest sweaters you have ever seen in your gotdamn life, it’s awful, an affront to taako’s living eyes. the twins try to outdo each other to see Who Can Give The Best Gifts. they’re rich now, so they can splurge. day-of, they cook for hours.
