The last thing Queenie wanted following the death of her mama and papa was to be cruelly removed from the house she had been born and raised in. But, she didn't have a choice. Someone had been notified of Leo and Joyce's passing, and it was ordered that Queenie and Tina be taken to the local orphanage for the time being.
Upon arriving at the orphanage, Queenie and Tina were required to be quiet and wait. Queenie couldn't be sure how long they had waited, but she got restless and began picking at the peeling paint on the wall behind her as she sat. This earned her wooden spoon against her hand. She was also threatened with something called "solitary confinement". Not that she knew what that meant, only that the woman didn't make it sound pleasant.
She went back to sitting still—not picking at the paint—after that, and didn't dare put up a fight when they needed to bathe her. The cold of the water wasn't fun, neither was the soap that ended up in her eyes or the chilly air that hit her when they took her out to dry her off.
Though, she didn't mind the oversized dress they put her in. Her "play clothes". They signified a sense of freedom to her. They meant she was allowed out in the open air after hours of being kept indoors, under extreme supervision.
"The bath was cold," she complained to Tina as they played on the teeter-totter, after all of their waiting. "And the lady got soap in my eyes!"
