My Year of the Book - Day 50: In honor of President’s Day, I’ve pulled a few volumes dedicated to some Chief Executives of the past. Although I don’t have much use for politicians in general, I’ve long been fascinated by the life and work of Theodore Roosevelt, and that’s clearly reflected on my shelves (which also include many books by TR himself). I also collect David McCullough and Doris Kearns Goodwin, who have each produced 4-5 presidentially-focused works to date (my copies of DKG’s LBJ and FDR books are currently boxed), and both wrote about TR. If I had to choose a favorite from each Pulitzer-prize winning author, I’d say DKG’s “Team of Rivals” (2005) & “Mornings on Horseback,” (1981) by DM. DKG’s “Rivals,” which reveals Abraham’s Lincoln’s genius in selecting from among several disgruntled opponents to fill out his presidential cabinet, has taken on a second life as a counter-intuitive leadership primer. Although “Truman” took the country by storm when it was published in 1992, “Mornings on Horseback” was McCullough’s first full-length foray into biography, and examines the early life of the frail, seriously asthmatic young boy who morphed into the 26th president of the United States. And where Goodwin’s book examines Lincoln’s final years as a leader, McCullough set out to write about Roosevelt until he’d developed the character and personality we recognize today as Teddy Roosevelt. In DM’s estimation, that journey took a mere 17 years. Both are essential reads from two of my favorite writers of history and biography, and I learned a great deal from both books.
