#LameStory 13: Believe in Angels? (Valentine's Day Story)
Chase is a senior baseball player at Bishop high school, and he's a pretty good one at that. He has a couple of offers on the table and it's like his only challenge is to finish the season. Chase dates Roxanne. They have this type of love hate relationship. Mainly because Chase is so busy that he never seems to have an adequate amount of time for Roxanne. Their relationship began with phone calls that lasted from 11 at night until 6 in the morning on weekends. Don't ask either of them the topic of their discussion, just know that they enjoyed every syllable. Then that eventually turned into long walks through a park with a mile long trail that they always seemed to turn into two or three. Don't ask either of them how it happened, just know they enjoyed every step.
Well as Chase's name got bigger throughout the state it seemed like the talks and walks got shorter along with Chase's temper. Simple questions from Roxanne would bother Chase. "What are you doing tomorrow?" "you should come to church with me sunday." "You know we never do anything together anymore" "Jesus Roxy I'm freakin trying!" Which is true! Chase doesn't mean to blow Roxy off but time is one of those things that you just cant stop. Plus he's a baller. Until Senior night. When he tore his ACL rounding second base. Now he needs surgery, and all of his offers have dried up. But his coaches say "Its ok. your knee comes first and you can always walk on"
After the surgery Chase wakes up to a card and flowers form Roxanne. The card says "God has a plan. I Love You!" Chase becomes furious and rips up the card before throwing the flowers to the floor. How could God play such a cruel trick on him? Â Why build him up and give him such a love for the game and make him so good at it just to take it away from him" Chase's entire life was on a cloud and now his sky is crashing down. That's when Chase hears a voice and realizes he is not in the room alone. There's a kid in the room with him and asks him if he's ok. Chase looks at the boy and finds himself distracted by the boys frail figure and shiny head with deep round circles that resemble the frame of a skeleton.Â
The boy introduced himself as Ted with a big smile on his face. A shift from the  caring eyes that he had when he first asked the question.Ted is only 9 years old and apparently he's been in the hospital for so long that he's a type of celebrity among the nurses and has mastered the art of memorizing the hospital's schedule. "It's ice cream time again" he would say minutes before the nurse walks in with a bowl of ice cream exclusively for him. He does this without even being able to read the hands of a clock. Chase was only scheduled to stay three days but it seemed as if he knew Ted's life story within the first hours.
Ted explained his family, and how each of them would bring him a different gift every week. He talks about how he thinks his sister always brings the weirdest gifts and how he hated how she used to always hide the remote at home. But he'd always end up saying how much he missed that about her all the same. His favorite topic was the girl that lived down the street. He talks about not being able to see her when he gets out. "she's gorgeous, and one day she actually smiled at me!"
One day he looked at Chase and said "You know the worst thing about this place is the fact that you can get all the ice cream you want, because you realize at the end of the day that's all they can do to help you." Chase asked Ted if he was scared. Ted pulls the pillow out from underneath his head and starts to pull out the feathers, a habit he developed and the nurses constantly chastise him about. He says "You know Valentine's day is coming up, and you know what i've always wanted? Kisses! One year my dad bought my mom some kisses. I thought you were suppose to buy rings and necklaces for Valentine day but i guess My mom loves kisses. My dad used to say that one day i would be buy my wife kisses she'll me special kisses back. but that was before i got here. Now, he says that angels are going to come and give ME kisses and i dont have to give them anything back! All i have to do is lay here and be good. i kind of like that. If my wife isnt Sally from down the street i don't want to buy kisses anyway."
He then asked Chase if he believed in Angels. Chase's mind immediately thinks of Roxanne before swallowing and saying "Angel's dont visit people like me." Ted told him that wasn't true because he remembers the first night Chase was there and how the angel walked in and gave him flowers. "Your angel came before mine! You must have been really good, or maybe i'm just not good enough" Chase sits and thinks. This little boy is dying and knows he's dying but he's the happiest person he has ever met. Chase say's "You're awesome kid! i'm just lucky." Ted says "BLESSED, my dad said you cant be lucky your just blessed!"
The next day as Chase left Ted pulled a feather out of his pillow and watched it slowly fall to the ground. "be blessed Chase!" he screamed in his high pitched voice. The first thing Chase did was to call Roxanne and they went out. They talked and talked and talked. They went to the park and the one mile trail turned into three. Chase explained what happened between him and Ted how ted called her an angel and wanted to take her back to meet him only to find out Ted lost his battle with cancer. A day before Valentine's day. This little boy would never buy kisses for Sally down the street let alone get have a girlfriend or get married. And Chase realized all the he had taken for granted.
As they stood over the small tombstone of Ted's grave Chase said "Im no angel but i brought you something" as he placed the kiss on the tombstone with his wife Roxanne. "And you dont have to give it back."
WE COMPLAIN ON VALENTINE'S DAY ABOUT HAVING ANYONE TO SHARE IT WITH COMPLETELY IGNORING THE FACT THAT THERE ARE KIDS ACROSS THE COUNTRY THAT NEVER HAVE, AND NEVER WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT OTHER TO SPEND VALENTINE'S DAY WITH BECAUSE, WELL THEY'RE NOT PROJECTED TO LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE IT. ITS A SAD TRUTH BUT IT IS A TRUTH NONETHELESS.Â
Give a Valentine's day card to a kid like Ted! and it's free! https://t.co/wpMWO8tEPL giving.archildrens.org/valentine pic.twitter.com/l2WluvLzTN
