On mission to #Kayes and #Yélimané, #Mali to conduct two #SQUEAC investigation with the French Red Cross’s (#FRC) “Severe Acute #MalnutritionTreatment and Prevention Program, Kayes and Yélimané Health Districts, Kayes, Mali.” The FRC has been present in the zone since 2010 working in partnership with the Mali Red Cross (#MRC) in the fight against malnutrition.  En mission à Kayes et Yélimané au Mali pour mener une enquête SQUEAC sur le programme de la #Croix-Rouge Française (#CRF) « Appui à la prévention et la prise en charge de la malnutrition aigüe et sévère dans la région de Kayes au Mali ». La CRF intervient depuis mars 2012 au Mali ou elle met en œuvre conjointement avec la Croix-Rouge Malienne (#CRM) ce projet pour la lutte contre la malnutrition.

Severe acute #malnutrition (#SAM) remains a major killer of children under five years of age. Until recently, treatment has been restricted to facility-based approaches, greatly limiting its coverage and impact.

The community-based approach involves timely detection of severe acute malnutrition in the community and provision of treatment for those without medical complications with ready-to-use therapeutic foods (#RUTF) at home; this little girl is eating the RUTF #PlumpyNut.

When well executed implemented on a large scale, community-based management of severe acute malnutrition (#CMAM) prevents the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children.

La malnutrition aiguë sévère (#MAS) demeure une cause importante de mortalité des enfants de moins de cinq ans. Il y a peu de temps encore, le traitement était uniquement dispensé dans des centres de santé, ce qui en limitait considérablement la portée et l’efficacité.

L’approche à base communautaire consiste à détecter en temps voulu les cas de malnutrition aiguë sévère dans la communauté et à fournir, lorsqu’il n’y a pas de complications médicales, un traitement composé d’aliments thérapeutiques prêts à l’emploi (#ATPE), administré à domicile ; ici cette fille mange de l’ATPE PlumpyNut.

Mise en œuvre à grande échelle, la prise en charge communautaire de la malnutrition aiguë sévère (#PECMAS) pourrait prévenir le décès de centaines de milliers d’enfants.
